Tom Cruise x Les Grossman x MTV Movie Awards

The scene from Risky Business is one of the most famous and recognizable scenes in movie history.

Loving Tom Cruise. I plan on watching Cocktails and Top Gun over the holiday weekend.

Polaroid might be dead, but instant film is not.

In 1948 Polaroid introduced instant film to the world and photography was changed forever. Everything about the highly innovative product was exciting and new, especially for its time People used to wait days for their film to be developed, now they had the ability to create a photograph on the spot. Just like Andre 3000 said in Outkast’s hit song “Hey Ya,” they would “shake it like a Polaroid picture!” Shaking the photo became an iconic part of the instant film experience.

Everyone from your uncle to Andy Warhol was using the film. Polaroid was, and always will be, a legendary company in the world of photography. Unfortunately, after years of bad business and the rise of digital cameras, the company was forced to file for bankruptcy. Polaroid stopped selling cameras in 2007 and the production of film will end in December of 2009. Though some have created timeless memories using Polaroid instant film, readers should know that instant film doesn’t end with Polaroid. Meet Fuji Instax.

Since the departure of Polaroid from the instant film market left a serious void, Fuji released their own version. Fuji’s version features a wide format which is unique and slightly cheaper than Polaroid. The colors in this new instant film are crystal clear and the images are ultra crisp. If you want to relive the Polaroid experience, you can find the Fuji Instax 200 camera on eBay for around $70 and film for around $.75-$1.00 a picture. The camera itself is somewhat bulky but the pictures it produces are priceless.

Instant film still remains the quickest way to create a photo memory. Even with all the new-age digital cameras and the conveniences they have provided – Fuji has given our generation and those to come the chance to experience the fun when you “shake it, shake shake, shake it.”

Rita’s O-Gee Photos

It’s been a loooooong time since I threw up pictures from O-Gee/Get Right/Whatever. Rita has been kind enough to send over the photos from last weekend at O-Gee. I’m pretty sure we’ll have these after every event she attends, so big ups to Rita!

Passion Pit @ The Newport 09-29-09

The $5 tickets sold out a few weeks ago and people were throwing their extras on Craigslist for $40+. The Clampdown DJ’s held it down before the show and Passion Pit hit the stage around 9:30. Amazing performance. The only thing that I would change would be to have it on a Friday night instead of a Tuesday. Work is going to be rough today.

Also, the guy who threw 200 glowsticks into the crowd really didn’t need to do that. Glowsticks are for raves and indoor putt-putt.

The videos do look a little better in HD.

12 of the Most Iconic Photographs Ever Taken (WARNING – Some Graphic, NSFW)

Whether you have seen these photos before or you are viewing them for the first time, you will remember them for the rest of your life. These are some of the most famous photographs of all-time. They capture a moment in time that will never be forgotten. Again, some of these images are quite graphic and NSWF, so view at your own risk.

Tank Man – Jeff Widener

Often considered the most iconic photograph in history, ‘tank man’ or ‘the unknown rebel’ shows an act of courage and defiance and earned the anonymous man widespread fame. It took place during the protests at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on June 5, 1989, and has subsequently become a symbol of the end of the Cold War era, and one of the most famous photographs of the 20th century. Four people claim to have took photos of the event, but the most reproduced image, and the most famous was by Jeff Widener.

Mike Wells – Uganda

This example of emotive imagery is of child in Uganda holding hands with a missionary. The stark contrast between the two people serves as a reminder of the gulf in wealth between developed and developing countries. Mike Wells, the photographer, took this picture to show the extent of starvation in Africa. He took it for a magazine, and when they went 5 months without printing it, he decided to enter it into a competition. However, Wells has stated that he is against winning a compeition with a picture of a starving boy.

Moon Landing

Possibly the most talked-about, debated and controversial picture in history, the picture of the moon landing has been seen as a feat of human engineering at its best, and has been speculated as a hoax by contractors of the event. Those in doubt of the authenticity of the picture have come up with many suggestions as to why and how it might have been faked. However, none of the accusations have been proved correct and the debate continues in some circles. For many, though, it provides a sense of accomplishment and acheivement by the human race to send a man to the moon, which for years was considered an impossibility. The American flag also installs national pride in the US as the winners of the so-called ‘Space Race’, and their establishment as the world’s one remaining super power.

Get Right Photos 07 – 03 – 09

A lot of people, including Kareem, were out of town this weekend so no one knew what to expect. We kicked it at Shawn and Martin’s until around midnight (all the stories you heard may or may not be true) and then headed to Karma. There were probably more people there than at the Cam’ron show.

This first picture is from the night before…

Get Right 2 Year Anniversary Photos

Who would have thought that Get Right, where white people go crazy and where shit like this happens, would pack Spice Bar for it’s 2 year anniversary. In my humble opinion, the 2 year anniversary is in the running for Best Get Right Ever. Cashola and Detox did their thing in the backroom while Gaybar, CJ Townsend, and Mister Shifter held down the rest of the bar. I would like to send a big thanks to Kareem, Milk Bar, Detox, Cashola, Dirtnap, and everyone else involved in throwing the best party in Columbus. Can’t wait for the 3 year anniversary.

Diplo @ Skully’s // Photos & Video

I don’t think I really need to review the show at all. It was off the hook. Think about Diplo playing a sold out venue. That’s exactly what it was. Diplo put this on Twitter during the show:

Santanas town was being requested as I was playing it in Ohio.”

Congratulations to the dipshit who was dumb enough to 1) request that DIPLO play a certain song and 2) request a song that was being played WHILE YOU REQUESTED IT.

Shouts to Odes for letting me use some of his photos!

Vintage Tattoo Photos

Decades ago tattooed men and women would travel with carnival freak shows across the globe; now tattoos are as common as pierced ears. I have the privilege of knowing some of the most talented tattoo artists in Columbus and their work can be seen on bodies all over the city. I will never get a tattoo myself but I will always be a huge admirer of those who do.

These images have inspired tattoo artists for generations. They allow us to witness the progression of tattooing and how the art form has changed over the years.

Cam’ron @ Karma /// I Really Mean It

The hype for this show was unbelievable. Some people in Columbus didn’t think the show would happen, but we all knew Killa would come show Ohio some love. We met up at Martin & Shawn’s loft (sheeked out) to have a few drinks before we left. A special thanks goes out to Odes for helping our crew “blend in” at Karma.

We walked to the show around 10:30 and ended up waiting outside for about 15 minutes in the hype line (they actually had a sign up calling it the “Blame it on the Alcohol” line). They let in 2 or 3 people every 5 minutes or so in order to keep a long line outside the club.

Pete and I managed to get inside for free. Don’t ask me how, that’s just how it worked out. We chilled in the front room for about an hour or so. DJ’s started playing and within minutes the whole floor was packed. The first guy who performed was horrible. He threw about $200 into the crowd (I copped $12). Taking that into account I will rate his performance as average. I think the second guy was named Nemesis and definitely was getting love from the crowd. Everyone seemed to know the lyrics and I was a little pissed that half the city (Brittany Hills, Sullivant Avenue) was feeling this dude and I didn’t know any of his music.  I’ll have to do some research and see if I can get some of his tracks up on The Grip. This guy was on stage the entire night. (Kind of like this video) The cop car outside was murked out as well.

Around 1:15 AM Cam’ron took the stage. By this time the back room at Karma was packed. I don’t really need to say much about his set. Cam killed it. Check the pics and watch the videos ( I suggest watching them in HQ).

Tilt-Shift Photography Timelapse

Tilt-Shift miniature faking is a creative technique whereby a photograph of a life-size location or object is manipulated to give an optical illusion of a photograph of a miniature scale model. Altering the focus of the photography in Photoshop (or similar program) simulates the shallow depth of field normally encountered with macro lenses making the scene seem much smaller than it actually is.

In addition to focus manipulation, the tilt-shift photography effect is improved by increasing color saturation and contrast, to simulate the bright paint often found on scale models. Most faked tilt-shift photographs are taken from a high angle to further simulate the effect of looking down on a miniature. The technique is particularly effective on buildings, cars, trains and people.
