First single of their upcoming album El Camino which is due December 6th.

BTIC

Hello All,

Something I’ve been waiting quite a while for has finally been announced.  There will be a new Fleet Foxes album released on May 3, as well as U.S. tour dates.  This is really the first new stuff they’ve released since 2008 unless you’re counting their side project White Antelope, which was basically FF to begin with.  Anyways, the title track “Helplessness Blues” is available for free download along with tour dates on their label Sub-Pop’s website [Here]. Enjoy….

Better Than Ice-Cream Vol. 71

For some reason I felt like doing a post today, maybe this will continue and I can get back in the mood to start posting again. Anyways, there are a few newish albums out from bands that you no doubt are already familiar with that are pretty good.  There’s also a couple albums out from bands that I haven’t really heard until a short while back.  So, first up… Belle & Sebastian‘s Write About Love came out in early October, it’s ok but to be honest I like The Boy With The Arab Strap for my B&S fix. Next is Lisbon, it’s the latest release from The Walkmen.  I don’t know how they do it, but they continue to get better with every album. Destroyer is an acquired taste for sure, but if you enjoy their previous albums, Destroyer’s Rubies will not disappoint. You can check out the previous post on Canadian bands for some background info on Destroyer. The Recording’s of The Middle East was released back in 2008, the album has a quietness to it that makes for a perfect non-distracting background album.  Not sure what to put now… how about The Bombay Bicycle Club, they just put out a new album last month titled Flaws.  Not sure about that one, but you should be able to get your hands on their previous release I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose.  Everyone probably already knows who The Temper Trap is but I like “Love Lost” from Conditions that was released back in Oct 2009 and figured I’d throw it in there for the hell of it.

The Walkmen, Lisbon: Woe Is Me

Destroyer, Destroyer’s Rubies: Your Blood

The Temper Trap, Conditions: Love Lost

Jonsi – Animal Arithmetic

Sigur Rós frontman Jonsi lets loose his latest video for “Animal Arithmetic”. I’ve always been a big fan of Sigur Rós and I kept comparing Jonsi to them. Now it all makes sense. Should have done a little research!

Janelle Monae

I heard this for the first time last week, the video is pretty sweet.  The new album from Janelle titled ArchAndroid was released in May.  The whole album is good, you can check out the rest of it on her website. Plus she’s hot and I’m diggin the shoes in the video…

Interpol: Lights and Barricade

Two brand new tracks from Interpol. I went to their show at Newport back in 2002 or 2003 and that’s honestly one of the last times I listened to them. Forgot how much I enjoyed their albums. Look for their new album to drop in the next few months.

Cee-Lo Green – No One’s Gonna Love You (Band of Horses Cover, Semi-NSFW Video)

Google Reader may be the best web surfing tool ever. I follow tons of blogs and often stumble on gems like this. Cee-Lo Green, the soulful crooner from Goodie Mob and Gnarls Barkley fame, puts his own spin on the Band of Horses indie hit. Took me a second to get used to but I can’t stop listening.

The video has a few NSFW moments which makes me think it won’t last long on YouTube…

Enter The Magical Mystery Chamber

I got this a while back and forgot about it; I don’t know how I could have considering they’re two of my favorites. Enter The Magical Mystery Chamber is a mash up of Wu-Tang and Beatles tunes that were put together over the course of a few months by Tom Caruana. It’s not on the same level of say, the Grey album, but it’s worth a listen. You shouldn’t have trouble finding a copy if you like it and he’s got some other decent stuff on his website. (Just a reminder, it’s Wu-Tang, the lyrics are NSFW)

CITY HIGH

CUTTING IT UP

The Black Keys – Next Girl (NSFW?)

“Next Girl” is one of the tracks off their brand new album Brothers which hits stores May 18th.

Not really sure what to think of the video. Watch it and you’ll understand what I mean. Might be NSFW b/c there are chicks in bikinis.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 70 by Wes Keyes

So, Ben Becker aka Gamble House (GambleHouseMusic.com) semi-released his self titled album this past fall.  The album was started while studying music, philosophy and literature at NYU.  Then came the move back to his native Pasadena, when the album was ultimately finished.  All of the instruments were played by Ben initially, but were played by a band on the final recordings.  The album has a warm dreamy, orchestrated sound, which is very Grizzly Bear esque, which makes sense considering Paul Gold (Grizzly Bear, Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors) mastered it in Brooklyn.

I only wish I could make it to the L.A. Natural History Museum on May 7th when Gamble House will be playing a set with The Tallest Man on Earth…

Gamble House – Central Park

Gamble House – Rue Dauphine

The National – Bloodbuzz Ohio

The National have released their first single off the upcoming album High Violet which is set to be released on May 11th. I’m always impressed when bands I like make songs about Ohio. The song is exactly what you would expect, and that’s a good thing. Thanks to Done Waiting for the heads up on the track.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 69 by Wes Keyes

The week is turning out to be pretty weird weather wise and it’s killing my allergies, all this warm to cold, sunny or rainy.  I can’t wait for things to normal out a little.  I thought it would be a good time to post this, in anticipation for their second full length that is due out sometime this year.

Team B is for or any of you Beirut or Arcade Fire fans out there, if you’re into either of the aforementioned bands, then you’ll know what to expect.  Their self titled album was released back in 2008, it’s pretty good, so if I were you I would consider getting it somehow. The newest EP titled The Lost Son from the group that consists of Kelly Pratt (Arcade Fire), Tracy Pratt (Beirut), Jon Natchez (Beirut, Stars Like Fleas), Ryan Smith (Twin Thousands, Stars Like Fleas), Jason Poranski (Beirut, FreeTime), Mike Fadem (Jealous Girlfriends) sounds more like a Beirut album, which might be due to the fact that Perrin Cloutier plays accordion for the album.  The lyrics for the album are by the late Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Theodore Roethke.  The EP was made available for free download by going to teambnyc.com and clicking on the cover art.  Enjoy…

Odes and Cecil are Famous.

This picture is from the upcoming Look at This F*cking Hipster Book which is being released on March 30th. The book is a little bigger than a CD case but its got at least a hundred pages. Most of the pictures in the book never made it to the website and they are pretty hilarious.

This couldn’t have been a more perfect setup. Congratulations, Odes and Cecil. You finally made it.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 68 by Wes Keyes

Chris Chu, Jon Chu, Julian Harmon and Tim Or are The Morning Benders out of Berkley. I’ve been diggin their Bedroom Covers and Talking Through Tin Cans EP’s that came out in 2008. Their most recent release Big Echo came out last month and it’s great as well, I don’t think these guys have put out a bad album. They’ll be down in Austin for SXSW followed by tour through the end of April, so if you’re lucky enough to be around, I’m sure they put on a great show. Below is a track from Bedroom Covers and one from Talking Through Tin Cans. On Bedroom Covers, The Morning Benders cover everyone from Roy Orbison to The Cardigans, it’s available as a free download on their MySpace along with some free mp3’s from Big Echo

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 67 by Wes Keyes

It’s been quite a while since the last B.T.I.C. and even longer since the one before that. I’ll make an effort to post more. Anyhow, I’ve been sitting around listening to some new tunes and checking in on bands that I haven’t heard from in a while when I came across the Smashing Pumpkins. They have a new album out! Yes, the same Smashing Pumpkins that you might remember from 7th and 8th grade or whenever it happened to be for you, has come out with a new album.  Now, before you get all excited and ready to relive the wonder years with your old Everclear and Silverchair albums, I must let you know that Smashing Pumpkins are TERRIBLE now.  And I’m not just saying that, if you don’t believe me go check them out for yourselves.

So, in light of your recent broken hearts over how much of a deuche Billy Corgan is (see RS article), here are some tracks. They’re not necessarily new but here are some albums that don’t suck…

Bowerbirds, Upper Air, “Ghost Life
The Raleigh North Carolina group will be playing Oberlin College on Mar. 11

Jose Gonzalez, Veneer, “Crosses
Veneer was the first album from Jose released in 03, In Our Nature was released in 2007.

The Wrens, Meadowlands,”This Boy Is Exhausted
July 2002: the wrens throw drunken hoe-down to celebrate final completion of the Meadowlands. Party highlights include erasure of all Meadowlands multi-track master tapes.

Washed Out, Life Of LeisureNew Theory
Bedroom synth-pop out of Georgia

Also check out the new albums out from Editors, Hot Chip, Joanna Newsom, Blitzen Trapper Black River Killer EP, The XX (playing the Wex in April) and Surfer Blood.

OK Go Does it Again…

Directed by James Frost, OK Go and Syyn Labs. Produced by Shirley Moyers. The official video for the recorded version of “This Too Shall Pass” off of the album “Of the Blue Colour of the Sky”. The video was filmed in a two story warehouse, in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, CA. The “machine” was designed and built by the band, along with members of Synn Labs over the course of several months.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 66 by Wes Keyes

I’m doing a little painting around the house today and it reminded me of Red House Painters. With the all the snow outside it seems to fit, Kozelek’s almost eerie vocals that fade into the background. They were formed back in 89′ in San Fran by Mark Kozelek who is actually from Massilon, Ohio. They signed with 4AD records in 92′, this led to a very busy three years where they released five albums before 1995. Things were relatively quiet for the next few years, their sixth album was finished in 98′ but wasn’t released until 2001 on Sub-Pop because of record label mergers, disagreements etc. During the period of unrest, Kozelek released some solo material, organized a tribute to John Denver titled Take Me Home and even had a few small acting rolls in Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky and Shopgirl. The band went through some personnel changes and reformed as Sun Kil Moon in 2003, this was followed with the releasing of albums Ghosts of the Great Highway, Tiny Cities and April. Below there’s a tune from Old Ramon released under Red House Painters and one from his most recent album April, which has guest vocals by Bonnie Prince Billy and Ben Gibbard.

Red House Painters – Smokey

Sun Kil Moon – Like the River

Efterklang + Kristian Leth: Modern Drift

Efterklang’s sound is dreamy and huge. Luckily, it leaves itself so open to visual interpretation. Not a blank canvas, but a launching pad, ready to propel the song into whatever video the lucky director gets to imagine.

For “Modern Drift”, that director is Danish multi-media artist Kristian Leth. The song is gorgeous, and for it Leth has sewn together a stunning and simple vision of nature and life that is achingly lovely.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 65 by Wes Keyes

A couple of things, if you remember a post about The Tallest Man On Earth from last February, I was excited to see that Kristian Mattson was coming out with a new album.  He signed with Dead Oceans Records which will be releasing his second LP titled The Wild Hunt in April.  He’s also scheduled a U.S. tour slated for this spring although show dates have yet to be released.  Below is a track from the The Wild Hunt titled “The King Of Spain” It has been made available for free download on the Dead Oceans website.

The Tallest Man on Earth – The King of Spain

Secondly, the video for “The High Road” was released today.  It’s the first single released from the Danger Mouse / James Mercer project Broken Bells.  I’m not sold on it though, it seems like they’re trying too hard and over-hyping it a bit much.  If it’s that good you shouldn’t have to sell it so much and make a huge deal out of everything that’s released…

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 64 by Wes Keyes

With the new year comes new releases.  One such release is from the recently Sub-Pop signed Beach HouseTeen Dream is the third album from the Baltimore duo Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally, following their self titled debut in 2006 and Devotion in 08.  After touring extensively in support of Devotion, they settled in up-state NY to work on the new album in a converted church called Dreamland.  The Europe tour ends sometime in March followed by U.S. shows…
