What is More Impressive; the Shot or the Handshake?

Monta Ellis of the Golden State Warriors hits an unbelievable shot while cameras were rolling. More and more players are getting on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, etc., so shots like these will continue to pop up on the internet.

Props to Nate for the link!

Kobe Bryant at 17 Years Old

Here is 17 year old Kobe Bryant going between his legs and dunking at the Gym Rat Midnight Madness High School Showcase in 1995. Bryant pulls off this dunk in a GAME less than a year after Isaiah Rider made it a signature dunk in the NBA dunk contest the year before.

Quite Possibly the Greatest Contest Dunk of All-Time

Never before has someone done an off-the-bounce, over someone standing, between the legs dunk until Guy Dupuy did it this past weekend. If you are bored, check out the Team Flight Brothers YouTube page. Insanity.

Thanks to Mark for the video!

NBA Top 100 Dunks 2008-2009: 100-70

Another video to help the hoop-a-holics like me get through the rest of the year. I completely forgot about some of these dunks. I also hadn’t seen a good amount of them either. I’m thinking NBA League Pass in 2010???

I’ll toss up the rest of the videos over the next week or so.

The Best Dunker in the World: Air Up There

I really wish I could argue with this claim but I don’t think I can. He’s 6’2 and as you can see from the still image on the YouTube video dude can get up.

NBA Top Ten Plays for October 29th, 2008

Greatest Hack-A-Shaq Ever

A very controversial method for dealing with Shaq is to foul him repeatedly and let him shoot free throws. He has the accuracy of a blind man so this is actually a very good way to deal with him. Last night the Suns and the Spurs played their first game of the season and 5 seconds into the game Shaq is wrapped up for the quickest Hack-A-Shaq ever. Shaq looks around in bewilderment and then looks over to Greg Popovich, who has a grin from ear to ear and is giving Shaq a double thumbs up. This is definitely one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen in the NBA and something I would never, EVER expect from a dorky organization such as the Spurs.

Obama is BALLIN!!!

Now that Obama has a 10 point lead in the polls…

It’s time to make it rain on them ho’s.

Pickup Basketball: The Hacker’s Commandments

1. Thou shall slap, grab and hold at every opportunity: Hackers often take immense pride in their ability to play “defense.” And, indeed, it is often difficult to score against Hackers, but not because they adhere to fundamental defensive principles like moving their feet and keeping a hand in the offensive player’s shot pocket. It’s because they’ve usually got a paw on your back and a knee up your ass. If you’re holding the ball, they’ll slap your arms. If you beat them on a drive, they’ll bump you and maybe grab your jersey. If you try to move and cut without the ball, they’ll try to hold or push you. Basically, it’s like ballroom dancing with an angry, autistic octopus. With rabies.

2. Thou shall protest every call: There must be a hospital somewhere that provides specialized lobotomies in which the human sense of shame and basic grasp on reality is surgically removed. I can offer no more reasonable explanation than that for the fact that Hackers believe, with every fiber of their twisted being, that they are completely and wholly incapable of committing a foul (except in some rare circumstances; see Commandment 5 below). They will moan, they will groan, they will call both your intelligence and (more often) honor into question. Furthermore, they have perfected the frustrated headshake and incredulous look. If these actions don’t make you want to spend the rest of your life punching them in the genitals, it’s only because you don’t have hands.

Can’t wait to finally see this man dominate the NBA.

11 Year Old Year Old Phenom

We all know Lebron James was being scouted from a pretty young age. By the time Lebron got to the NBA we probably all felt like we knew his skills and what he brought to the game fairly well. Although it may have been a shock how fast Lebron adapted to the NBA game, there was never a doubt that the young kid from St. Vincent-St.Mary’s prep in Akron, Ohio was going to be an NBA star.

At what age should a player feel assured that standing out from the pack will mean grabbing the attention of scouts, agents, media, and other hangers-on that follow a rising star? These are the types of questions I was pondering after watching the following video of Jayshawn Augusto, an 11-year old hoops phenom who has his heart set on making it to the ‘League’. Check him out:

USA Basketball: Road To Redemption Episode 1

The NBA has an amazing channel on YouTube where they release all sorts of videos/highlights every week. One that really caught my eye is Nike’s Road to Redemption series which follows coach Mike Krzyzewski and the USA men’s basketball team as they prepare for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. You can see how badly these players want it. They are trying to live up to the Dream Team’s standards, and hopefully in 2 weeks they will be able to do that.

Stephon Marbury’s New Tattoo

Are you kidding me? Branding at its finest.

Stephon Marbury has a shoe company called Starbury which sells cheap ($8.99!!!) basketball shoes. I definitely think it’s an awesome thing to do since not everyone can afford $160+ kicks. Either way a head tattoo is a bit much.

Obama for 3!!!

I’ve really enjoyed finding out Obama has all this game hidden beneath that suit and tie. Hitting a 3 on the spot like that is clutch.

The New York Times reports:

“Obama is a wily player of pickup basketball, the version of the game with unspoken rules, no referee and lots of elbows. He has been playing since adolescence, on cracked-asphalt playgrounds and at exclusive health clubs, developing a quick offensive style, a left-handed jump shot and relationships that have extended into the political arena.”

This clip showcases some of his skills during High School.
