Real Life Mario Kart

A bike lane running across Portland’s N. Williams Ave has been transformed into an IRL Mario Kart track by a fun-loving Stumphead who adorned it with the game’s signature bananas, mushrooms, and stars. Mario Kart and GoldenEye are still the 2 best multiplayer games of all-time.

Scrapertown – Scraper Bike Documentary

Meet Tyrone Stephenson aka Baybe Champ. He’s one of the driving forces behind the Scraper Bike movement in Oakland the the focus of this documentary. The film is entitled “Scrapertown” and it focuses on the impact the Scraper Bike Movement Is having in the urban community of East Oakland. It’s a must-see film.

I’ve only seen one scraper in Columbus.

America’s Top 50 Bike-Friendly Cities

Minneapolis took the number one spot.

Google Maps Adds Bike Lane Option

The new bicycling directions available on Google Maps starting Wednesday supplement the guidance already provided to motorists and pedestrians. The biking directions initially will be available only for the United States.

Google spent the past six months tweaking its mapping service so it could recommend routes that would steer bicyclists away from big hills and heavily congested streets. The feature can be used to pinpoint bicycling trails in more than 150 cities.

Bike directions already have been available on some smaller web sites, but Google is the first major internet mapping service provider to add the option.

How to Use a Treadmill

If you’re on a treadmill and a camera is rolling, chances are it’s going to end like this.

It looks like he hit the front brake, but upon closer analysis you can see him stop the front wheel with his foot. Nice job.

Outraged Cyclists Re-Paint Removed Bike Lane

A few sources are reporting that men were arrested yesterday for trying to re-paint a bike lane on a 14-block stretch on Bedford avenue in Brooklyn. The bike lane was recently removed by the city because of complaints by some local groups (the usual stuff about having fewer parkings and “hurting local businesses”). The unknown men made a video (see below) of them doing their guerilla bike safety civil disobedience.

Thanks to Wes for the video.

A Session with Steven Hamilton

This video just popped up on the Animal blog. It’s been a while since I’ve seen/heard from Steve. I just scanned some old photos from freshman year so I’ll include those as well.

Bonus: old school Chaz McGee photo at the bottom.

Whips

High Five New York City

This is a good way to separate the nice people from the assholes. I like how half the people are absolutely delighted that this just happened to them and the other half are either indifferent or super pissed off. Personally I would think that I was infected with anthrax.

Old School Clips From Inception

Steven Hamilton just posted all the videos from the original Inception video on his blog. There are a lot of familiar faces in the videos, but I’m going to post the one that I’m in. The first clip is video of me hitting my friend Josh with my car at Easton. Afterwards he crawled to the curb and I burned out and fled the scene. Multiple people ran to Josh’s side and gave him my lisence plate info.

No charges were ever filed.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Bat For Lashes – Whats a Girl To Do?

Loving the simplicity and creepiness of this music video. I need to get my hands on some of those animal heads. Those could be incredibly useful in a lot of situations that I encounter in my day to day life.

Thanks to Kayla for the link!

Thank You, Steven Hamilton

Today I walked up to my front door and saw a note laying underneath my mailbox. The note read:

“Steve – I saw your pedals were a little beat up. Thanks for riding them. Here’s another pair. – Steven”

Under the note was a box with a brand new set of pedals for my bike. The ones I had on my bike are pretty beat up and spray painted white, so I was super pumped when I opened the box. Thanks, Steven, for the pedals. That was an incredibly nice gesture.

Baubike

BauBike is inspired by Bauhaus design.

It is constructed around the geometric shape of the square and the equilateral triangle. The design is stripped down to clean lines and raw material.

The open-end piece above the back wheel, offers the possibility to customize the function of the bike to whatever need you may have. The different accessories can be placed in the tube and can easily be changed if needed.
The design follows a set of formal rules, limiting the geometry to straight lines in a pattern of 60 and 90 degree angles in proportions following the principle of the golden section.

By limiting the form with a fixed set of design rules and stepping away from the traditional function-oriented approach to the design process, this project transcends the border between design and art, raising fundamental questions about the nature of the bike as design and as a lifestyle accessory and introducing a much needed playfulness on the bicycle scene.

The BauBike is a bike for the modern urban society where adaptability is a necessity.
