“Trunking” – Dog Fighting’s Dark Secret

One of the most barbaric forms of animal cruelty has an underbelly which for years has remained literally hidden in darkness: “Trunking” is dog fighting’s ugly secret.
“It’s just that taboo,” Tio Hardiman, a Chicago-based, dog fighting consultant to the Humane Society of the United States.
Capt. Steve Shatkin of the New Jersey SPCA described trunking to Pet Pulse at the state’s headquarters in New Brunswick.
“Two dogs will be thrown, literally, into the trunk of a car like this,” Shatkin said, pointing to a mid-sized car in NJSPCA’s parking lot. “(The) trunk is closed, and the operators either drive around for a set period of time, or just leave them in there with the trunk closed.”
“And after a certain time, open the trunk, and the best man left is standing. And it’s a bloody mess in there, and that’s how they declare a winner.”
The carcass of the defeated dog is typically tossed to the side of the road, says Hardiman, who also is a pit bull advocate.
“Once in a while I’ve seen it, OK?” Hardiman said. “I know some guys may have put some dogs in a trunk. They fought, and then the next thing you know they turned the music up real loud — for about 15 minutes, maybe 30 minutes.
“And then you open up the trunk, one of the dogs might be dead, the other one might be mangled up.”

Why are we just ticketing these people?? These people are animals. I think it should be a mandatory 5 years in jail if you support or watch/bet on these fights and 10 years if you are in any way involved in it. Lets put these scumbags in where they will be beat and tortured like they do to the dogs.

I realize this is an old post, and I was given the link, but decided to read the post. At any rate, trunking is still problem these years later…
This is also in response to Willie who posted the intelligent comment of “Whatever it’s a dog what about these children.”
I am tired of hearing the excuse for animal brutality that we need to ignore the brutality of one species in order to solely focus another. I am a long time child and animal advocate and I can tell you from experience, that animal abusers do not stop with animals, they migrate up to abusing children, then adults who put two dogs in a trunk and let them fight to death.
Wake up and realize that the brutality we do to other species is not confined to those species, it ALWAYS leads back to ours.

Ya know why there have been an increase in tips, but not arrests? Because these people are getting away with it. Either by being exceptionally sneaky, the law enforcement not caring, or manipulating the law once caught. I bet there have been plenty of people caught, but they don’t get in trouble for dog fighting. Just like Vick, they’ll plea down to something less severe and get a fine. This crap will never stop as long as the legal system allows these criminals to bend the law in their favor, and the law enforcement doesn’t care.

What a STUPID comment to make! Your post insinuates that a pit bull is a blood thirsty killer that will turn on a human that hurts them. Anyone who truly knows dogs and pit bulls in particular, knows this is not the case and is painfully aware how poisonous words such as yours are no different than the slander mass media puts out there, playing off the public’s ignorance and instigating hysteria about bully breeds. If you truly care about the plight of the pit bull, then think before you comment or don’t comment at all! You are a hinderance to the uphill battle they already face!

just saw this 2yrs later. you misunderstood my comment i rescue pits i love pits. but i meant the ones they trained to fight their abused dogs if u locked them in with them and they desperate fight to get out and they get hurt or killed that would be good p unnishment cause they trained them to fight so they should get demised by what they created. but i defend pits they are the sweetest. but thanks for calling me stupid. i pr obably have more intelligence than u. afterall i was be ing pa id over $7700 month on a $ 90,000 yr job so i cant be too stupid. also was on ABC tv famous for international dog rescue from middle east to usa . and my niece runs the biggest best dog and animal rescue in florida. she is dog talk show host. radio. tv.

I really think that the punishment violent offenders receive should mirror the crime. You toss dogs in a trunk for 30 mins?
We’ll go easy on you. In a trunk, with a wood chipper on. Yeah, it’ll be a little loud in there, won’t it? But that’s not all. You start with your hand 24 inches away from the blades and you advance your hand one inch every minute for 30 minutes.
No big deal.

just don’t understand where these sickos all come from – ticket for killing an animal – there has to be a lengthy jail stay and huge fines or it will not stop.
Its scary to think there are people like this in the world – yes keep them away from your children and your pets – this is sick and these people are depraved – the only thing I can think is that they are just stupid and have no intellegence – most animal abusers are pond scum

just saw this 2yr ago comment on a post i made, NO i didnt mean pits are vicious, i meant these people that train some to fight lock them in tr unk with the pit that they taught to fight its not the dogs fa ult but if it attack them to get out in des peration . not saying pits w ould attack but we talking the ones they forced to attack. anyhow just saw someone all over what i posted. and found i cant even delete or change my post so posting new comment. lol. i love pits and rescued them.
