Who is better, E-603 or Girl Talk? Be prepared to hear that argument a lot in the future. E-603 is an up and coming mashup artist that will never escape comparisons to Girl Talk. I’ve read a handful of reviews and the general consensus seems to be that E-603 puts on better live shows than Girl Talk, and if you’ve ever been to a GT show (I’ve been to 3), you know that is saying a lot.
He has two albums out and both are 100% free. Here are a few preview tracks as well as links to the albums. His first album Something for Everyone is pretty good but his sophomore release Torn Up is really, really, really good. Download, enjoy, and be on the lookout for upcoming shows. how could people possibly say this guy puts on a better show than girl talk? that’s ridiculous. i’ve seen both. girl talk is much better. as far as i know, e-603 has only played a handful of shows in the northeast. girl talk has been going strong for a long time and basically invented the art of putting on a fun laptop show. he’s currently blowing away thousands of people at every summer festival, complete with a traveling circus of visuals (people on stage doing toilet paper guns, confetti, balloon drops, and more). girl talk shows are legendary. e-603 has played a couple of shitty parties.
e-603 is pure imitation.

So, E-603 is better than Girl Talk based PURELY on the fact that Girl Talk has been in the game long enough to hire a really great publicist? I have also seen both, and I found e-603 not only more engaging, but also way more musically interesting. When Girl Talk played he based a lot of his live show off of his album’s big hitters. E-063 has enough material to try different combinations in the live setting. Some of his best mash-ups are played live; for instance, he’s never used any of his Weezer samples on his albums or early tracks, and they were all of which are huge hitters during his performance. E-603 only plays parties because he’s a college kid. Gregg Gillis has had over 6 YEARS to get his act together (yeah, you might now know that Feed The animals is GT’s 4th mash-up album). Give E-603 enough time and he will be huge. In fact, he performed at 2008’s POP Montreal festival.
Additionally, if you really want to talk about imitation, we need to go back to 2002, when Soulwax released ‘As Heard On Radio Soulwax’ under an alternate moniker, 2manydjs. It’s pretty much Night Ripper 4 years before Night Ripper was conceived. The duo had been performing as 2manydjs for a few years before they tried to get legal permission for the samples found on “As Heard On”. So maybe you should re-think your haughty opinion of Girl Talk as the all-creative godfather of compositional sampling.
Oh, and let us not forget the bastard pop scene of the late 70’s or the British bootleg scene of the early 90’s. Mash-ups did not start with Girl Talk, and I wish people could see past the author function as the end-all be-all of creativity.

very well stated. i’d have to see e-306 live to make a judgement, but based on what i’ve heard, someone’s challenging gt’s reign for once, and that makes for some healthy, danceable competition.

You seem to be all bark, no read. Try reading the post I was replying to, than ask yourself how one can base their judgment of a live show purely off of the size of the show? There was no discussion of musical talent, just a showing of “E-603 is worse than Girl Talk because Girl Talk gets invited to play huge fests and than can spend money on things like toilet paper guns.” Again, I’ve seen both of them live, I had a good time at both, I thought E-603 was way more interesting live.
Additionally, I find it annoying that you would assume that I learned all I know about mashes and bootlegs via Wikipedia. I had heard of 2ManyDJs before I had heard of GT or E-603, I knew them as the alter-ego of Soulwax. I had heard of the “As Heard on Radio Soulwax” before I heard Night Ripper, though I did not hear it until after Night Ripper. But hey, if you want to have a legitimate discussion about the role of authorial function in the world of post-modern music, I’m all ears. Just don’t call me a know-nothing plagiarizer.

just listened to torn up, it’s pretty much completely awful. not one “ohhh shiiiit” moment in the entire mix. e-603 used some pretty played out, cheesy stuff, and it came off as an utter night ripper rip off (see the title of the album, the font, several of the same samples and nearly the exact same biggie verse). really disappointing.

Also, he never used Juicy at all, but rather Party and Bullshit.

Been listening to Girl Talk for a long time now, just heard of E-603 and downloaded both of his albums yesterday. Although the music is enjoyable, I do feel it is a GT rip a lot of the time. I wish he was more diverse, its obvious he tried to recreate GT’s music and style. He shouldn’t have used GT’s samples, or atleast not NEARLY as many. At times I feel that E-603 is a mashup of a mashup (Girl Talk’s work).
For the record, GT is a lot better.

it looks like GT ripped off some of the album “torn up” cuz GT uses alot of those samples, but, “torn up ” was self released 2009. GT’s new album with alot of the same samples was released in 2010. maybe e-603 is getting ripped off a lil and not girl talk
