RIP Beta Movement

20 03 2009

Beta Movement is no more. After rocking Columbus for about a year they are now pursuing other projects. Garrett was kind enough to send me over an unreleased Beta Movement album titled Maskulation. You can download the entire album here or you can listen to one of the tracks below.

Beta Movement – TYRAntRmx

“In The Double O I Represent the C-O”

19 03 2009

New track from Cam’ron. Not as good as the last 2 tracks he has released but I’m not complaining.

Cam’ron – Caveman

Empire of the Sun – Walking on a Dream (Treasure Fingers Remix)

This song kind of has a Hercules and the Love Affair sound to it. Loving this right now.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 16 by Wes K.

12 03 2009

It’s important to rotate your music, the old stuff gets lost as the new replaces it.  It’s not that you want to forget it, there’s just so much good music.  I’m very guilty of this, every so often I go through my iTunes and pull out things I haven’t listened to in a while.  I came across Kings Of Convenience the other day and forgot how much I really dig their sound, and wondered what they’ve been up to.  Kings consists of Erlend Øye and Eirik Glambek Bøe of Bergen, Norway (you know my thoughts on Norwegians). Ill feelings aside, Kings don’t really do much together anymore but there is talk of a new album/tour in the works.

Erlend Øye is living in Berlin working on a side project The Whitest Boy Alive.  They put out their first album Dreams in 2006 and have followed that with Rules being released this month.  Everything Erlend has put out is great, The Kings albums are good and The Whitest Boy Alive’s two releases are f-ing addictive.  Rules has been the soundtrack for my week, seriously infectious beats and Erlands voice is so mellow.  As far as shows go, I wouldn’t look for anything state side in quite a while.  Check out their myspace profiles and websites for info, albums and stuff.  You wont be able to get Rules from Amazon till the end of this month but it’s available through the bands label www.bubblesforsale.com if you happen to know German! (just kidding, theres an English text option)  I wonder what something with them and Wale would sound like?

By the way, trying to pick only two songs for this was very hard.

The Whitest Boy Alive – Promise Less Or Do More

The Whitest Boy Alive – 1517

Weezy F. Baby, Get ‘Em A Leash!

10 03 2009

Apparently this isn’t a “real track.” I don’t really know what that means because Weezy rips it and the beat is ill sauce. Drake (who is on the track as well) claimed the record isn’t legit and that a real version is coming out soon.

It’s legit enough for The Grip. As Diddy would say, “LETS GO PEOPLE!”

Lil’ Wayne feat. Drake – I’m Goin’ In

A Fifth of Beethoven (Soulwax Remix)

6 03 2009

Some classical funk for the masses. I just jigged around the pool when this came on and I heard the weather back in Columbus is amazing, so lets jig together, shall we? DON’T FORGET, GET RIGHT IS TONIGHT.

Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band – A Fifth of Beethoven (Soulwax Remix)

DJ Moxy – I Heart The Disco Beat Mix

It’s pretty obvious that the Columbus DJs are putting in work. Here is a brand new mix from DJ Moxy. Download, dance, and enjoy!

Some Monday Feel Goods

2 03 2009

Love Concept is an act hailing from Chicago that I know absolutely nothing about EXCEPT they make good music. I’m a big fan of music that brings a smile to my face and Love Concept is no exception. Enjoy!

Love Concept – Time Enough for Love

Love Concept – Windy City Television

Beastie Boys – Jay-Z – Brooklyn We Go Hard (DJ Rob Dinero Remix)

1 03 2009

This song reminded me to go back and listen to the Beastie Boys albums I have neglected for the past year or so. The Jay-Z x Beastie Boys mashup works pretty well in my opinion. Props to Notes From A Different Kitchen for the track.

Why Didn’t I Post This Sooner?

26 02 2009

Columbus’ 2 favorite rappers? Cam’ron and Gucci Mane. Newest addition to that list? OJ Da Juiceman. He’s playing a show in Columbus in the near future and I get an extra late pass for waiting this long to post this track.

OJ Da Juiceman feat. Cam’ron and Gucci Mane – Make Da Trap Say Ay!

New Tracks From DJ Moxy

26 02 2009

DJ Moxy was kind enough to send me over some new music for Columbus to enjoy. Both of these tracks are original works, no samples from anyone or anywhere else. Be on the lookout for Moxy this Spring because she’s got “a new vibe, a new DJ set up with live instruments, a new DJ Moxy bustin’ the fuck OUT!” Both of these tracks will be on a new mix which will come out the weekend of daylight savings time.

Make sure you catch Moxy at performing at Sweatin’ on May 8th!

DJ Moxy – GRRRrrrttyy

DJ Moxy – Rebel Mind

Ohio Stand Up!

25 02 2009

***UPDATE*** Cam dropped a new track called Cookies and Applejuice. It’s a radio rip so the quality isn’t that good but I’ll update it once I get a better MP3. CDQ MP3 added.

Damn. Half the time I can’t understand his lyrics but they are always hard as hell. Shouts to TC @ TSS for the track.

Cam’ron – I Used To Get It In Ohio

Cam’ron – Cookies and Applejuice

Ludacris – Move Bitch (Disco Villians Remix)

25 02 2009

Today has been a little hectic so I apologize for the lack of content. I found this on HypeBeast today and I’m sure it’s old but it had me bouncin’ at my desk. I call it ghetto hyphy bmore.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 13 by Wes K.

25 02 2009

THE CANADIANS ARE COMING!!! from Newmarket, a northern burb of Toronto. After playing sold out shows in NYC and DC, Tokyo Police Club are making their way to C-Bus.  Their latest Elephant Shell is following up their 2006 Ep A Lesson In Crime and 07’s Smith EP.  Trust me, there’s a reason they sell out shows.  Dave Monks, Josh Hook, Graham Wright and Greg Alsop are Tokyo Police Club.  The band formed during their senior year of high school and since they have been touring non-stop, playing Coachella, Bumbershoot, Lollapalooza, as well as the Glastonbury, Reading and Roskilde festivals in Europe.  Also making their rounds on the late night circuit they’ve played Letterman twice and Ferguson.

Tix to their MARCH 2 show at THE BASEMENT are only $12, so make sure you check out the show.  Are they playing a venue near you? Click HERE to see! Plus, for February and March, the band is touring with Invisible Children Inc. to help raise awareness of the situation in Uganda that the film Invisible Children focused on.  Albums as well as some other cool shit can be picked up tokyopoliceclub.com. What did TPC drummer Greg Alsop have for THE GRIP?

THE GRIP: In most cases, which comes first for you guys, the music or the lyrics?
GREG ALSOP: The music, generally. It sometimes takes Dave a while to settle on his lyrics, so the song can take on different meanings from practice to practice while we write it. Sometimes however, a song title comes before anything, like “Citizens of Tomorrow”.

THE GRIP: What makes poutine so good?
GREG ALSOP: I think it’s the fries that really tips it over the edge. The French went almost a hundred years eating just cheese curd melted in beef gravy before someone accidentally spilled it on their friends fries. Voila!

THE GRIP: Do you have a favorite city to play in the states?
GREG ALSOP: I’ve heard good things about Columbus! (Please come see us).

THE GRIP: What do you like to do when not playing music?
GREG ALSOP: We all just got Nintendo DS systems for this next tour, so Mario Kart is going to be our new favourite hobby.

THE GRIP: Where’s a good spot to catch a show in Toronto?
GREG ALSOP: My personal favourite is Sneaky Dee’s. Great room upstairs and great nachos downstairs.

Tokyo Police Club – Your English Is Good

Tokyo Police Club – Be Good (RAC Remix)

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 12 by Wes K.

17 02 2009

Since forming in 2003, Tapes n’ Tapes have put out three albums (a self titled EP, The Loon and Walk It Off), played some of the best festivals in the US, and their popularity has soared.  With all of their success, they’ve managed to stay original and not turn into the Kings of Leon.  After listening to their albums, it’s easy to see why they have played Coachella, my personal favorite Bumbershoot, and Letterman. They have an edge, a little punk, a little blues, and a little rock.  It’s hard to explain, thats why you’ll just have to check them out for yourself at THE BASEMENT on Saturday, February 21st.  Josh Grier, Jeremy Hanson, Matt Kretzman and Erik Appelwick are Tapes n’ Tapes. Be sure to check out their website for videos and tips on saving money to finance your ticket to the show, and score some merchandise from tapesntapes.com.  You can also check out their MySpace. Big thanks to Josh Grier aka Tapes1 for answering a few questions for The Grip.

GRIP: You could attribute much of your early success to the internet. Since
gaining popularity, has that changed at all?
Josh: The internet has definitely helped us out.  It’s a good way to get music
and information out into the world.  But I’m not really sure how things have
changed in the last few years.  We mostly just use the internet to keep in
touch with folks, via our website, Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, and the like.
We just try to keep them up to date and let people know what we’re up to.
I’m not really sure what effect it has, but we have fun with it and
hopefully so does anybody else who might be reading/listening/watching.
GRIP: Do you guys have a favorite beer/liquor, or do you just drink whatever is
put backstage?
Josh: We do enjoy a fine whiskey when it’s available.  In general, we’re not
too picky.  If it’s tasty, we’ll drink it…in moderation, of course.
GRIP: Who are you guys listening to that most people wouldn’t know about right
now?
Josh: There’s this band called Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers that we’re all
really into right now.  :)   But seriously, I’m not really sure if there’s
much that we’re listening to, that other people wouldn’t know about.  I’ve
been known to dabble in some turkish psych and tropicalia.  We are all big
Dr. Dog fans and big White Denim fans.
GRIP: Which one of you guys has hooked up with the ugliest chick while on the
road?
Josh: All of the women at our shows are beautiful.  If any of us had hooked up
with any of the fine women at our shows, I couldn’t tell you.  You see, I’m
a gentlemen, and I don’t speak of such things.
GRIP: What’s your favorite city to play besides Minneapolis?
Josh: Asking me to pick a favorite town to play in, is kind of like asking a
parent to pick a favorite child.  I just can’t do it.  I love them
all…except for a few of them…they know who they are.  :)
Again, thanks to Josh and Tapes n’ Tapes.  Hopefully we’ll see all of you there on Saturday night so you can buy me a beer.  As always, sport your Grip tees if you gotte’m!

*** Kid Cudi Tazed & Arrested At Phoenix Reebok Party*** ♫ Kid Cudi – Can I Be ♫

16 02 2009

UPDATE: Kid Cudi was tazed and arrested this weekend in Phoenix at a Reebok sponsored event where he was scheduled to perform. When asked to wear Reeboks for his performance, Cudi refused and insisted on wearing Jordans. After a screaming match with Reebok employees and a small altercation, police were forced to taser and arrest Kid Cudi. He spent the “Day N Night” in jail.

What a dumbass! Shouts to Nate for the info.

****************************************************************

Kid Cudi is arguably America’s most popular indie rapper and that didn’t happen by accident. His style, lyrical prowess, and use of popular indie samples on his mixtapes have all fueled the buzz surrounding the Cleveland, Ohio rapper. His first big mixtape release, A Kid Named Cudi (pronounced Kuh-Dee), featured a track titled “The Prayer” which utilized a sample from a Band of Horses track titled “The Funeral.” 808’s, Akai’s and Pro Tools are dope, but using one of the mellowest indie-rock tracks of 2008 as a beat takes some skill and some guts, and Cudi’s got both. If you’ve never heard it, now is your chance.

A new Kid Cudi mixtape track using an LCD Soundsystem sample just leaked and I had to share it. Listen. Twice.

Kid Cudi – Can I Be (LCD Soundsystem Sample)

Kid Cudi – The Prayer (Band of Horses Sample)

♫ Matt & Kim – Daylight ♫

12 02 2009

I could be mistaken but I’m pretty sure this is a new song from Brooklyn’s indie superstars Matt & Kim. The song is pretty good, not exactly my digs. I take that back, its definitely good so I posted it for obvious reasons.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 11 by Wes K.

12 02 2009

The year was 2007, Bob Barker leaves the Price is Right and George W. was still the President. But thankfully for us, Delta Spirit was shacked up in a mountain cabin outside San Diego working on what was to be their newest album Ode To Sunshine. Shortly after their 2006 release of their EP titled I Think I’ve Found It, they went on tour with Dr. Dog, Clap Your Hands And Say Yeah and Cold War Kids.

Their music has been described as indie, folk, alt-country and a mix of Americana/soul. Delta Spirit consists of Jon Jameson, Brandon Young, Matthew Vasquez, Sean Walker and Kelly Winrich. Ode To Sunshine can be purchased from Amazon or through their labels website Rounder.com. Be sure to show your support for Delta Spirit by picking up a copy of their album or better yet, check them out IN PERSON at THE BASEMENT on MONDAY FEB 16. Jon was also cool enough to take time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions for The GRIP.

GRIP: Has anyone from the group been to Columbus before? If not, what do you expect? If yes, what impression did get from your visit?
JON: It was the first place that I had chipotle! And I love Chipotle. Also my girlfriend lived there for a bit. I remember it as a very beautiful place.

GRIP: You’re all trapped in an elevator with only enough oxygen for 4 of you, who do you sacrifice?
JON: Me. I play bass. Not that essential.

GRIP: If you had to choose an item as a mascot for your tour, what would it be? We party with a plastic penguin for some reason, I don’t really know why.
JON: A snake. It just always seems to be relevant to our everyday conversation.

GRIP: Someone’s never been to L.A, where would you send them first?
JON: Anywhere but Hollywood. It’s so gross. All the hip kids live in silverlake/echo park/eagle rock. There are american apparels, pho spots and bio-diesel gas stations. We played out there a lot as we were starting. I still like long beach the best.

GRIP: You guys break into the San Diego Zoo, which animal would you be more likely steal?
JON: Christian the lion.

Again, much thanks to Jon and Delta Spirit. I thought about giving Jon my personal VHS copy of Under Siege to say thanks, but its too precious (Check their MySpace for back story-texas jail) Everyone show your support for bringing great bands like this to C-Bus by going to the show and wearing your GRIP tee is you’ve got one.

What do you listen to when you’re at home?  You’re either doing homework, laundry, or just cruisin’ the web. Something relaxing, not distracting, but really good.  I listen to some random stuff, sometimes a little blue grass or some folk.  The Tallest Man On Earth is the alias for Sweden native Kristian Matsson. I don’t like to compare him to the obvious folk legends, Dylan or Seger, but he truly is.  His music is simple and effortless, which makes Shallow Graves one of my favorite albums. I find myself replaying it multiple times, because listening through it once seems too short.  His most recent album, Shallow Graves, as well as his 07 self titled EP, are available for download at Amazon. He toured late last year with Bon Iver and continues to tour the US until April when he returns to Europe.  He has a few shows in the area, one in particular I would love to go to. Kristian will be playing in Bloomington, Indiana with John Vanderslice and The Mountain Goats which will be amazing.  If you’ve never heard of them, be sure to check them out as well.

March 23 Triple Door in Seattle
March 25 Rickshaw Stop in San Fran
March 26 Troubadour in LA
April 5 At the Shubas in Chi-town
April 6 Buskirk-Chumley Theatre w/ The Mountain Goats – Bloomington, Indy
April 11 The Brattle Theater in Cambridge, Mass
April 15 Bowery Ballroom in NY, NY

The Tallest Man on Earth – The Gardener

The Tallest Man on Earth – I Won’t Be Found

It’s a Movement

9 02 2009

I know others have posted this song/video but the CDQ just popped up so I figured I would throw it up as well.

I also learned over at the Weed Steeler Blog that Cam’ron is working  on a new sitcom that he calls a “Black Curb Your Enthusiasm.” Can’t wait to see that…

Adulture was kind enough to send over a new remix of Animal Collective’s “Leaf House.”

Also check out Adulture opening up for Diplo at Skully’s in April.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 9 by Wes K.

5 02 2009

Aaron Behrens and Thomas Turner are the minds behind Austin based Ghostland Observatroy. A throwback to 80’s synth rock and electro punk, Ghostland brings to the stage a sound like no other. With their first release delete. delete. i. eat. meat in 2005 and Paparazzi Lightning coming close to a year later, Ghostland made waves on the national music scene with appearances on Austin City Limits and Conan. They continue to push the musical envelope with their 2008 release of Robotique Majestique. Musical influences such as Bowie, Laurent Garnier, LCD and the Clash keep their sound new yet vintage.

When asked by Spin magazine what makes this duo work, their reply was, “We like they way each other look naked.” As talk turns to their onstage demeanor, the cape weilding Turner and swaggering Behrens encourage audience members to “lose their egos” when dancing at shows. My only hope is that they’ll make a stop in C-Bus sometime soon! The two songs below include one from both “Paparazzi Lightning” and “Robotique Majestique”.

Ghostland Observatory – Sad Sad City

Ghostland Observatory – Dancing On My Grave
