A Mountain’s Ghost

Visit the top of Adam’s Peak in Sri Lanka and you’ll see a striking sight — at sunrise the mountain’s own shadow is caught in the morning mist before you.
“The shadow seemed to rise up and stand in front of us in the air,” wrote a correspondent to Nature in 1886, “with rainbow and spectral arms, and then to fall down suddenly to the earth as the bow disappeared.”

MTV’s “Jersey Shore”
This might be the most entertaining TV I watch in 2009. It airs on December 3rd and promises to be an in-depth look into the life of guidos. Hair gel, tanning beds, weight rooms, nothing will go untouched.
MTV, I love you.
The Slingjaw Wrasse
The slingjaw wrasse gets its name from its highly protrusible jaws, which can extend out to over half the fish’s total body length. Unlike most other bony fishes, the lower jaw is not firmly attached to the skull. As a result, the slingjaw wrasse can project the upper and lower jaws simultaneously. This anatomical anomaly is employed to snatch shrimps, crabs and small fish out of narrow crevices and from between coral branches.
Crazy.
Till the Casket Drops…

Till the Casket Drops is scheduled to drop on December 8th, but I’m guessing it will leak and drop about a week before that. via The Smoking Section
Nice Moves
Trying to impress friends while video is rolling is never a good idea.
Chances are you will end up on YouTube. This is old but really, really good.
Seven-Point Buck Loses Battle With Lawn Ornament

A love-struck buck ran out of luck a week ago. The seven-point buck was killed when it rammed a 640-pound concrete statue of an elk in the backyard of Mark and Carol Brye’s home in rural Viroqua.
Bucks often fight during the breeding season, commonly called the rut. Dominant bucks defend breeding territories and female deer by sparring with subordinate bucks. Antler battles sometimes result in the death of one or both deer, but usually end with the biggest buck winning and the smaller buck high-tailing it out to another area.
Brye said his morning ritual is to rise early and look out at the life-like statue about 40 yards from his home.
Brye said he knew exactly what happened when he saw the statue tipped over. Although they were about the same height, the statue weighed at least three times more than the 180-pound deer. He didn’t realize the buck lay dead a short distance away.
The buck apparently staggered about 20 feet and fell.Brye said the deer shattered its skull. The antlers were still on its head but were dangling. Brye, 58, is considering removing the antlers from the unlucky buck and gluing them on the elk statue as a remembrance of the strange but true story.

A Spring in New York by Fred Lebain
Last spring Lebain took images of various areas in new york city, each one of them an occasion of a ‘first visit’ to the location, in which he photographed and then printed in large poster format. later, he returned to the same spots for a second visit, capturing a larger framed shot in which he aligned the poster documenting his first visit to the current scene.

The Carter Documentary
Wayne has been obviously leaned out for the past few years and it looked like it was starting to take it’s toll. I heard rumors that No Ceilings was “lean free,” and if the music was any indication I would say that rumor is true.
The documentary is featured at this years Sundance Festival.
Grizzly Bear – Ready, Able
Incredible stop-motion music video for “Ready, Able” by Grizzly Bear. Directed by Allison Schulnik. This is one of the coolest videos I have seen all year, stop motion or not. I’m still listening to Veckatimest and videos like this make me appreciate the album even more.

World’s Biggest Trebuchet
Besides giving away to charity, most rich people waste their money on boring, frivolous things such as yachts, diamonds, and mansions. Here’s a rich English guy that knows how to have fun. Launching a piano 300+ ft. is much more entertaining when it’s on fire.
I hope he does build a bigger one. I would like to see a flying double-decker bus.
