Space Experiments

Astronaut Koichi Wakata, who has been living aboard the International Space Station since mid-March, has carried out a series of offbeat space experiments proposed by the Japanese public.

The experiments, which the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has dubbed “Try Zero-G,” consist mainly of physical exercises and gymnastics (including calisthenics, push-ups, flips, twirls, cartwheels, overhead soccer kicks, and swimming). In addition, Wakata folds clothes, rides a “magic carpet,” squirts water from a syringe, puts eyedrops in his eye, and attempts to propel himself through the room by flapping a fan. He also enlists the help of a fellow astronaut for some arm wrestling, hand-shaking, slap sumo, and tug of war.

My Paper Mind

An experimental animation in a technique being called “stratastencil” devised by Javan Ivey. Each frame is one piece of 4×6 card stock. Can anyone explain how this is accomplished?

Since The Cavs Lost, Their Marketing Team is Thinking of New Ways to Distract You From Your Horrible Disappointment

This week they decked out eight lucky players in 70′s style haircuts. What are they trying to say, that the Cavs would have won if it was 1973? They are probably right. No one would be able to stick LeBron. I think Ilgauskas and Varejao have the “most authentic looks.”

♫ The Horrors – Sea Within a Sea ♫

[guest blog by Scotty Niemet]

Wow, my first guest blog entry…stoked, thanks Steve!

About a week ago I became a freak over this new LP Primary Colours by The Horrors. I honestly haven’t geeked out over an album in quite a long time. The Horrors began as a group of garage rock DJs in England, formed a band with elements of garage and old school goth (Bauhaus, The Cure, Christian Death). Their new LP has them evolving deeper into the psych realm of British influences. I hear bits of practically every amazing UK band that has in one shape or form changed my life….ya I’m a geek. Just watch the video.

Columbus Resident, Grip Reader Called “Wolf Altbro #1″ on Hipster Runoff

Hipster Runoff, dubbed a “culturally relevant blog” by its author, is full of sarcastic satire that aims at anything/everything remotely related to “hipsters.” In a recent post about wolf shirts, Carles (the author) used a picture of my good friend Paul and labeled him “Wolf Altbro #1.” Altbro is a title Carles uses on people he thinks are half-jock half-hipster. If you know Paul, you know this is basically the most exciting thing to ever happen to him. It’s only downhill from here, buddy. This is your 15 minutes.

Literal Music Videos: Total Eclipse of the Heart

For a while I thought only old people thought these were funny. Now I think they are funny. Am I getting old, or are the videos getting funny? I’m losing my touch.

♫ Grizzly Bear – 2 Weeks ♫

This song is amazing; incredibly melodic and easy on the ears. The video on the other hand is just a little weird. I can’t put my finger on it, but the guys all look really creepy. I’m loving Grizzly Bear’s new album VECKATIMEST. Go grab it if you haven’t already.

Daito Manabe

[guest blog by Columbus Hype]

I was completely intrigued by this Artist, Designer, Programmer, DJ, VJ, Composer based out of Tokyo, Japan. By sticking sensors to his body, he can use impulses sent to each sensor by body movement to create light or sounds to coincide. He also has done work with Wii remotes, light installations, and NIKEiD studio to create some crazy experiments. Imagine what this dude could do with Christmas lights.

Get Right 2 Year Anniversary Photos

Who would have thought that Get Right, where white people go crazy and where shit like this happens, would pack Spice Bar for it’s 2 year anniversary. In my humble opinion, the 2 year anniversary is in the running for Best Get Right Ever. Cashola and Detox did their thing in the backroom while Gaybar, CJ Townsend, and Mister Shifter held down the rest of the bar. I would like to send a big thanks to Kareem, Milk Bar, Detox, Cashola, Dirtnap, and everyone else involved in throwing the best party in Columbus. Can’t wait for the 3 year anniversary.

Check the rest of the pics and videos after the jump…

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 29 by Wes Keyes

I know I did this last week too, and I’ll probably be doing it again. Sometimes it’s better doing it this way than one band/album at a time. Here are four more albums/artists to check out. Give them a listen and let me know what you’re thinking. This week they all share a more mellow sound that’s a little country/folk/rock/indie/lo-fi except for PATP, I figured I’d throw them in there just for the hell of it. Enjoy…

Deer Tick – This Rhode Island foursome re-released 2007′s War Elephant in 2008, and were the first band profiled on BriTunes. They’re set to release their sophomore album Born On Flag Day later this month. The closest they get to C-bus is Cleveland in July, but they’re touring just about everywhere else this summer…

Deer Tick – Art Isn’t Real (City of Sin)

Magnolia Electric Company – Here’s another Oberlin artist for you Kelley B! Rock/country, indie, folk artist Jason Molina is a Lorain, Ohio native and attendee of Oberlin College. He’s been writing and singing in some form or another since 96′, formally announcing the formation of Magnolia Electric Company in 2003. He’ll be playing various dates around the US till August then it’s off to Europe. The mp3 you’re hearing is from the 2007 box set Sojourner.

Magnolia Electric Company – No Moon on the Water

Pete and the PiratesLittle Death, released in 08′, was the first full length from the Reading, England group. They’re playing a festival in Austria, and after that, some venue in England I’m sure. Chances are they’ll never play here but the album and EP’s are great. It was actually a hard decision as to which mp3 to attach…

Pete and the Pirates – Come On Feet

Great Lake Swimmers – This group from the land up north (that means Canada!) have put out four full length albums in the past seven years. Included in that list is Lost Channels which was released this past March. Having a comparable style to Sufjan Stevens, and Will Oldham (who’s playing the Palace Theatre June 12) and great reviews from Paste and Pitchfork they continue to outplay expectations. It’s definitely not party music… They’ll be touring Canada until August, then you can see them in TN, KY, PA and MI…

Nike Naked Running Camp (NSFW?)

There is no frontal nudity in this video, but if your boss doesn’t want you watching naked people running you better wait until you get home. This might be a good way to train for the Columbus 1/2 marathon coming up in the fall. Jogging naked through the Short North wouldn’t be that shocking.

Thanks to Columbus Hype for the video.

Mannequins on Skateboards

Loving this video right now. I’ve watched it 5 or 6 times and I can’t really figure out why. I think leaving all the mannequins as they lay throughout the video was a great decision. The wig on the last one is also a nice touch.

I never get tired of these videos. I really like the way everything looks like micro machines. One day I’ll save up for one of those flossy digicams that take 1080i video. One day…

New Jigga?

New Jigga on a Saturday? No way I’m going to pass this up. It’s no “Dirt Off Your Shoulder” or “Lucifer,” but I’m feelin’ it nonetheless. First track (produced by No I.D. and Kanye West) leaked off Blueprint 3 which means he paid too much or he didn’t pay a dime. Roll with it.

By the way, I hope T-Pain NEVER retires auto-tune. Rapper Turnt Sanga. Spotted at TSS (where else?).

Flashmob – Hammer Pants Prank

A flashmob is a large group of people who invade a public space and perform an orchestrated dance. I’m not sure where the idea came from, but I’m sure it was inspired by Improv Everywhere. You may or may not have seen the Sound of Music flashmob at a large train station somewhere in Europe. Very cool video, check it out if you haven’t already.

This video features hundreds of dancers clad in gold hammer pants invading what appears to be the biggest Hot Topic in America. MC Hammer would be proud.

Hood Workout DVD

The video I posted last year has been completely removed from the internet. While searching for it, I stumbled on another gem. These guys are insane. Those pullup-toe touches seem impossible. Look for me next summer at a playground near you.

Spencer Pratt – I’m a Celebrity (Official Video)

Wow. Speechless. The Get Right blog yesterday and I had to give them their rights to a one day exclusive. How can I not post this? The song itself is hilarious. I honestly have listened to it at least 10 times. It’s so bad, but at the same time, it’s not even that bad. It takes about 20 seconds to start for some reason. Watch. Laugh. Forget I ever posted this.
