IF-MODE Folding Bike

Every once in a while you see product that just looks like it’s going to be a hit: Areaware’s IF Mode folding bike has that spice, especially when you see its folding mechanism demonstrated.

Unfortunately the things that makes it top shelf—the full-sized wheels, the hidden chain, the disc brakes—also make it expensive: $2,250. Hang tight, cheapskates; counterfeiters are standing by.

54 years, 8 months, 6 days, 8 hours, 32 minutes and 20.3 seconds

Shizo Kanakuri disappeared while running the marathon in the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm. He was listed as a missing person in Sweden for 50 years — until a journalist found him living placidly in southern Japan.

Overcome with heat during the race, he had stopped at a garden party to drink orange juice, stayed for an hour, then took a train to a hotel and sailed home the next day, too ashamed to tell anyone he was leaving.

There’s a happy ending: In 1966 Kanakuri accepted an invitation to return to Stockholm and complete his run. His final time was 54 years, 8 months, 6 days, 8 hours, 32 minutes and 20.3 seconds — surely a record that will never be broken.

Shizo is my inspiration for the 5k I’m running on Saturday. If it takes me longer than 30 minutes, I plan to leave the country and never return.

Alcoholic Monkeys!

In the Caribbean, Vervet Monkeys have developed a taste for alcohol and can regularly be spotted stealing cocktails from humans on the beach. Brilliant wildlife video from BBC animal show ‘Weird Nature’. Check the drunk monkeys around the 2:20 mark.

Shouts to KNGSRW for the video.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 25 by Wes Keyes

Normally I like to write the info for the posts myself, but Current put together a great video about today’s artist and I couldn’t have put something together like that myself.  King Khan and the Shrines are playing the Wex tomorrow night May 14. It’s not very often we get acts like this in C-Bus, not to mention that it’s at an intimate venue like the Wexner Center. So, what else do you have to do on a Thurs night. Hope to see everyone there….

Noodling: The Art of Hillbilly Fishing

Noodling is a southern US practice of fishing for catfish using only bare hands. Many other names, such as catfisting, grabbling, graveling, hogging, dogging, gurgling, tickling and stumping, are used in different regions for the same activity. Noodling is currently legal in eleven states.

Location of all NBA Shots ’07-’08

Jason R. Bailey built this Processing visualization that tracks the position of all the shots from the NBA’s 2007-2008 season. I would have thought a lot more shots came from the top of the key.

Want to Write for The Grip?

Over the past year or so The Grip has gained quite a following with around 2,000 hits a day. As my responsibilities at work and at home continue to grow, I find less and less time to update the blog. Wes Keyes has been writing his “Better Than Ice Cream” series for a while and the response has been great. I think it’s time to recruit some new bloggers!

I’m looking for people who are willing to post a few times a week. If you read The Grip, you have a pretty good idea what kind of content I’m looking for: Music, art, photography, general nonsense, basically anything that someone aged 15-40 would enjoy. I tend to keep the content pretty neutral and safe for work with inimal cursing and no nudity. I don’t make any money off of this blog so you will have to do it “just for the taste.” I need people who can commit to consistently post multiple times a week. It’s surprisingly easy. You don’t even have to create the posts, you can just send me e-mails and I will do the work.

I also would not mind having “guest blogger” spots for people to write about something on a less frequent basis. If you want to do a movie or restaurant review or rant about something, shoot me an e-mail, we might be able to work something out. If you are intetested, shoot me an e-mail at lieborama@gmail.com with a few ideas.

Brian Detmer: Adaptations

Artist Brian Dettmer dissects books to expose the beauty of their anatomy. Using an X-acto knife and tweezers, Dettmer pulls away carefully selected layers of books, revealing a complex view of their internal organization.

In this time when the book is no longer the most efficient way to store and transmit data, Dettmer’s transformations are at once nostalgic and forward-thinking. His process is a wonderful example of how a destructive act can create something beautiful and new.

Nike Kobe & LeBron Chalk Commercial

They did an amazing job portraying LeBron, but I had to read the description to figure out the other character was Kobe. I don’t think there is any resemblance at all. Overall the commercial is pretty funny and I’m not mad at the Ohio shoutout.

Afghanistan’s Only Pig Quarantined in Fear of Swine Flu

Seriously. This is not from the Onion, it’s from Reuters.

KABUL (Reuters) – Afghanistan’s only known pig has been locked in a room, away from visitors to Kabul zoo where it normally grazes beside deer and goats, because people are worried it could infect them with the virus popularly known as swine flu.

The pig is a curiosity in Muslim Afghanistan, where pork and pig products are illegal because they are considered irreligious, and has been in quarantine since Sunday after visitors expressed alarm it could spread the new flu strain.

“For now the pig is under quarantine, we built it a room because of swine influenza,” Aziz Gul Saqib, director of Kabul Zoo, told Reuters. “We’ve done this because people are worried about getting the flu.”
