True Hip-Hop Stories: The Homeless Emcee

“This is the story of a homeless rapper I met on the streets of Brooklyn. I feel for him because it’s quite obvious he suffered a great deal as a child. I don’t agree with how he lived his life but everyone deserves to be forgiven.”

Keak Da Sneak – Hot N’ Cool

Love me some Keak Da Sneak.

Seagulls Stealing Ice Cream

I like birds a lot but I have almost been pooped on numerous times at the beach and I’m beginning to think they are aiming at me. Remember that one bird who stole chips from the convenience store? That’s the way to do it.

I’d file a cone up with dookie and walk around hoping one of those suckers would dive bomb my cone. That will teach them.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 15 by Wes K.

Dark Was the Night is a compilation benefiting the Red Hot Organization, an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. Released in Feb 09′, the title is derived from the Blind Willie Johnson song, “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground,” which is covered on this collection by the Kronos Quartet. Contributors on this album include: Arcade Fire, Beirut, Yo La Tengo, Cat Power, Andrew Bird, The National, Bon Iver and many many more.

Dark Was The Night began three years ago with a casual conversation between Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National and John Carlin. In discussing the project, they agreed it made sense not to do a “theme” album per se; but something that showcased the best in independent music, with an emphasis on traditional themes played and arranged in a contemporary way, and on songwriting, which is the strength of many of the artists featured here. As Aaron and Bryce started inviting their peers to contribute, their intuition about the pro-social disposition of so many of them was confirmed. As a result, 31 exclusive tracks were recorded.

Tracks below are from The National, the other is Yeasayer…

The National – So Far Around The Bend

Yeasayer – Tightrope

The $500,000 Basketball Shot Prank

I have watched a bunch of the pranks from the College Humor prank wars series and some of them are pretty damn good. Now that CH is getting bigger, the pranks are going large scale as well. Streeter pulls off one of the best pranks of all time, in my opinion.

Anyone feel like getting someone with me? Got any ideas? Let’s do it.

New Tron Movie with Musical Score by Daft Punk

French electronica duo Daft Punk has been signed to write the original music score for Tron 2.0, Walt Disney’s upcoming sequel to the groundbreaking 1982 animation cult hit which was scored by electronic music icon Wendy Carlos. Daft Punk’s members Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter have been involved in various films before, but Tron 2.0 will be their first complete feature film score. The film, scheduled for a 2011 release, is helmed by Joseph Kosinski and will feature Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett. According to industry news reports, Tron 2.0 will play as the “next chapter” after the first film, with Wilde starring as one of the heroes trying to help fighting the Master Control Program, the evil intelligence protocol that was the nemesis in the 1982 film. The assignment of Daft Punk to score Tron 2.0 has been confirmed to Upcoming Film Scores by Walt Disney Pictures.

Tabi Bonney Shouts Out The Grip!

Tabi Bonney was kind enough to shoot a video drop for The Grip! Go buy his new album titled Dope. He is busy filming a new video for “Rich Kids” that should be finished soon. In the meantime peep the video drop and the video teaser.

Now all I need is a Cam’ron drop and my life will be complete.

Creepy Tree

There was a tree in front of my house when I was a kid that totally looked like a human at night. Shadows from a street light would shine right into my room and it looked like a dude waving his arms around. Pretty creepy stuff when you are 13, malnourished and home schooled.

I was ecstatic the day they cut that sucker down. No more nightmares.

Better Than Ice Cream, Vol. 14 by Wes K.

I seem to recall a video of Steve asleep at the wheel while driving home from Bonnaroo in 07′. Undoubtedly, if he was somewhat coherent that weekend, he would have seen The Whigs perform. The Whigs entered the scene in 2005 with their self release Give’em All a Big Fat Lip, it was rereleased in 2006 after signing with ATO Records. Their latest album, Mission Control, was released in January of last year.

2008 was a busy year for The Whigs, playing with My Morning Jacket, Yo La Tengo, The Kooks and Tokyo Police Club (who were here in Columbus last night) among countless others. They hit up SXSW, Sasquatch, Bumbershoot and went on their first European tour. Yep, I would say they’re pretty f-ing good. I would think that having the chance to see them rock out a small venue would be a must. Oh wait, what a coincidence… they’re playing The Basement next Monday. Even in our shitty economy, tix for the March 9 show aren’t expensive, and they have cheap natty! Julian Dorio, 2007 Esquire Magazine drummer of the year, had some words with The Grip.

Man Arrested for Stuffing Cat in Bong

A homemade bong, consisting of a piece of garden hose attached to a duct-taped plexiglas box, is seen in this March 1, 2009, handout photo provided by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Dept. Deputies responding Sunday, March 1, 2009, to a domestic disturbance call at a Lincoln, Neb., area residence, cited a 20-year-old man on suspicion of animal cruelty after catching him smoking marijuana from the contraption that had Shadow, a six-month-old female cat, stuffed inside its 12-inch by 6-inch base. The man told deputies the cat had been acting hyper and that he was trying to calm her down.

Greatest Horse Related Stunt of All-Time

I have done very little research to back up my claim but I challenge anyone out there to prove me wrong. If you can I will give you a free Grip T-Shirt. I still have 30 sitting up in my room and I might as well get rid of them.

Props to me for finding the video.

New Banksy Pieces in London

The worlds most famous guerrilla artist Banksy is back after a short hiatus. Two new pieces were spotted in London, both utilizing his trademark stencil technique.

In related news, my $30 bid did not win the eBay auction of the Banksy piece from Jamaica. The highest bid was $5,000 which didn’t meet the reserve and wasn’t close to the $150,000 Buy It Now price.

Death Metal Pizza Dude

I wish I would have able to see this dude. Imagine driving down Morse Rd. and seeing that guy raging in front of Sun TV. Another one of my favorite videos of 2009.

Big props to Kelley B. aka Roads Between Us for the video.

DJ Moxy – I Heart The Disco Beat Mix

Not shopped.

Some Monday Feel Goods

Love Concept is an act hailing from Chicago that I know absolutely nothing about EXCEPT they make good music. I’m a big fan of music that brings a smile to my face and Love Concept is no exception. Enjoy!

Love Concept – Time Enough for Love

Beastie Boys – Jay-Z – Brooklyn We Go Hard (DJ Rob Dinero Remix)

This song reminded me to go back and listen to the Beastie Boys albums I have neglected for the past year or so. The Jay-Z x Beastie Boys mashup works pretty well in my opinion. Props to Notes From A Different Kitchen for the track.

DJ Self Help – The Ritalin Bounce Mix

DJ Self Help is new to Columbus but it’s obvious he isn’t new to music. This mix highlights Self Help’s truly eclectic style of party rocking. Called The Ritalin Bounce because it can’t sit still even for a minute, it’s a hyperactive, multi-genre megamixdub that fits 50 songs into 30 minutes, most of them original blends performed by Self Help on his turntables. If you get bored, just wait a second.

Look for this mix on Solid Steel Radio in the near future. Yo, Self Help, hook me up with an MP3 of that Mind Set On Your Money track from your MySpace!!!

A Tribute To Wolf T-Shirts

Growing up in the Midwest, I was exposed to the Wolf T-Shirt at a very young age. I have multiple friends who have wolf shirts in their wardrobe rotation and I see them at truck stops all over Ohio. Today the wolf is known as a sinister creature–one associated with mystery, power, danger, and sheer evil. Plus they look awesome.

I would like to thank the wolf for continuing to be one of the most skilled hunters in North America. This one’s for you.
