Russia’s 9/11 Memorial Gift to the USA: Tear of Grief

10-story high sculpture given to the US by the Russian government. Located at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor as a memorial to those that died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The large polished titanium teardrop to represent the tears in Moscow shed for the 9/11 victims. A constant flowing of water which causes the sculpture to appear to weep.

How is calling a hideous 10 story eyesore for what it is showing no respect for your country?

And if this isn’t an example of ugly, just wait till they build the “Freedom Tower” on ground zero.

So help me out here…since when did unquestioning obedience and having no sense for aesthetics suddenly become patriotic?

        February 13, 2010 at 3:26 am

        • “Mr. Tsereteli first envisioned the image of the “Tear Of Grief” on September 11, 2001 after watching the horrific collapse of the World Trade Center towers on Moscow television and then driving past a crowd of crying Muscovites in front of the US embassy nearby. He began the design of the “Tear Drop Memorial” on that very day.”

People were crying in the streets of Moscow. The enormous tragedy that unfolded on Sept 11 moved the country’s most prominent sculptor. A nation that was once our enemy offered us a unique and sincere gift as a gesture of sympathy for the 3,000 + innocent people who lost their lives that day.

The Tear of Grief is a gift of condolence given to you and to me as Americans. Those who only see that gift as ugly or vulgar don’t really see it as a gift at all. Those who are insensitive to the horror that rained down upon the streets of New York City don’t really comprehend that thousands of people were crushed, pulverized, and incinerated on that day. To those who ridicule this gift because they see no aesthetic merit, be aware your criticisms are an insult to those who perished and to their families left with only memories of their loved-ones. Freedom of speech does not relieve you of your responsibility for the consequences of your speech.

If a family member or friend of mine died on 9/11 they wouldn’t have wanted me to loose my sense of taste and they certainly would not have wanted me to stop questioning what I see. And for all you know I may have lost someone in that event so you are in no position to be accusing me of being insensitive.

What is missing from this thread is the fact that those here with an open mind are not the only ones criticizing the aesthetics of this object. You see it was originally supposed to be put on the shore line of Jersey City, but the residents said “no” to having this sculpture foisted upon them, the mayor said”…I’ve seen of the thing, it’s too big. I don’t want to see it on our Hudson River waterfront.” – and there were several families in Jersey City who lost family members on 9/11. You can read about it in:
            http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D03E6D81E31F935A2575AC0A9639C8B63

…and when you’re done with that there is a children’s fable that captures this behavior of those who wrap themselves in the flag and are quick to call anyone who sees things differently as unpatriotic…

I believe that all of our voisterous young people (with so much time that they have nothing better to do than post ugliness and hatred through out the internet,) spend time serving alongside those who are brave enough and proud enough, to represent us, their country on the line, in harms way.. These types of postings are an embarrassment to what you claim to represent. Perhaps you woulg gain some respect and pride in yourself and what we have in this country if you were faced with the opponent personally, eye to eye expecting your team to back you up with their lives. Something is so wrong with today’s youth, growing up and passing their graffiti laden negative attitudes via the power of the net. I also hold the administrators liable for allowing these postings to be displayed. Yes it is free speech but also reflects a communistic attitude and propaganda. Something that our forefathers have paid the ultimate price against.

We all have the freedom to express ourselves… Donnie has the freedom to express that the idiots who made the above remarks are immature…. I have the freedom to agree with him. It’s funny how everyone wants to have their freedom to be a critic, but not to appreciate the meaning and care behind a wonderful gift from a country who suffered with us in our time of loss… it is a beautiful piece of work, a perfect sculpture of a teardrop, something many of us shed for our losses. And those of you who mock.. also had the freedom not to care about the 9/11 incident. What a great country we live in.

Thank you Shirley. Had Kenobi ever had a mortar go off and wake him/her in Iraq, or watched as bloody people were carried out of the building you work in due to a rocket attack while defending our freedom, or had friends killed in a restaurant, or a street bizzare suicide bombing, or was simply mature enough to know what 9/11 really meant, maybe he/she wouldn’t be so quick to be an “art critic”, or publicly voice a “sense of humor” over such a symbolic gesture of friendship and kinship from a country who didn’t have to care a damn bit, but did…and showed it. Enough said.

When I first started the blog I had to make a decision: discuss meaningful, relevant topics and try to “impress” people with my knowledge and opinions, OR post things that have almost no educational value at all and entertain people. I went with the latter choice. If you want to be uptight and get offended, don’t do it here. That’s like getting pissed off at a comedy club.

I like to stray from content that dominates the news: murders, kidnappings, rape, war, the economic crisis, disease, global warming, etc. You can turn on any channel or click on any website for that. The 11 O’clock news is almost always depressing. Sometimes I want to read something that brings a smile to my face. Blogging about giant mercury ball sacks does just that.

If you want to relax and enjoy yourself, take a look around. I promise you after a few days you’ll realize that while stimulating intellectual conversation and thought provoking debate are important, it’s not necessary at all times. Laugh a little.

FYI, most of us have supported our troops in ways you wouldn’t even fathom or comprehend. You are no longer forced to serve in our military. Which should be manditory! Some of us have lost friends and family during 911 and while protecting your freedom!!! and the lack of respect that has been shown here should be condemned and publicly commented on. It’s a disgrace! You are showing disrespect, even more than Russia could have if their gift as has is ignored and pushed under the carpet.
Thank you to the country of Russia for your token of respect for those who were lost during 911.
You show respect and for that you can have most of those who have posted negative comments at the forum.. Perhaps you can instill some pride in country as you have shown by your gift to ours.

Sorry to have intruded on your little kingdom of laughs. It isn’t like getting pissed off at a comedy club… I purposely did a search on this topic to see if it was true, since as you said, it was not discussed in a lot of other media, And I found the reality of it here. I was unaware that the basis for your blog was laughs and disrespect and mockery. Or what you deem as “things that have almost no educational value at all and entertain people”. As your more ardent posters prove, this is definitely not a site for intellectual or stimulating conversation. Perhaps that’s a good thing then, that I understand I don’t belong here, apparently neither does Donnie. Have fun children. Thank you for proving the gift was real. That was all I was looking for in the first place.

  29. Surely

To all who aim to poke fun at something with so much dignity behind it… you need to grow up.

Of course not all of us were directly affected by these events. But for the ones who were, and for the ones whose lives will forever be changed you need to show respect. You have no idea what some people went through just to see another day, and in some cases, to never have that chance again.

This was given to us with open arms as a symbol of the pain they felt. Obviously, the Russian Government is more mature, and actually sensitive to the events that occurred. What other country reached out?

To any Russian who reads this, I know this wasn’t your idea… but thank you and the whole country for the respect you showed. Hopefully it can go to prove that two different nations do not need to quibble and fight… rather live in peace together.

And to all those ignoramuses, you should have been the people in those planes, not the innocent children, women and men who were lost. You disgust me.

    God Bless America.

  30. In September 2005, Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the ground breaking ceremonies for the “Tear Of Grief” monument which since has been erected at the edge of New York Harbor. One year later, on September 11, 2006 President Bill Clinton, other federal, state, and local officials, and a host of dignitaries gathered for the official dedication. Leann Rimes sang the National Anthem. I was amazed to learn that few Americans are aware of this gift from the Russian Academy of Arts and the people of the former Soviet Union. My amazement ultimately led to http://hubpages.com/hub/TEAR-DROP

ok, i think all of you need to look at the positive side and stop downing what is a very kind thing that the russians did for us. what ever it may look lik doesnt matter wat matters is that they did a very kind thing for our country, and they noticed that our country was put in major grief because of 9/11. and artist has a different way of expressing their feeling thru their art. i think its beautiful and shows true meaning to grief, sorrow, and true friendship.
