SAT Scores vs. Music You Listen To

Not really sure if I believe this.

Kind of surprised Lil’ Wayne is on the bottom end. I know some smart ass dudes who bump Weezy on the regular.

So basically, this study says it’s better to listen to white people music.

its not really the fact thats its a race thing. it is just saying that listening to classical music makes you think more than if you were listeing to rap. and what also helps this study is that lil wayne doesnt actually say full words which in turn MAKES PEOPLE D-U-M-B!!

Actually that’s not what it says at all. This study draws a correlation not a causation. You can’t determine cause from correlations. Think about the different environments people are immersed in. Many of those who listen to Lil Wayne do not care about the SATs. They are not important to these people. The SAT is an achievement test and does not measure other types of intelligence, such as emotional intelligence.

What does classical music make one think about? I think it’s more of a cultural thing than a “it makes you think more” thing. Lil Wayne can actually be very thought provoking. Instead of making judgments about people, I would suggest that we try placing ourselves in their position.

no, YOU clearly don’t listen to lil’ wayne. go listen to his song tie my hands and then tell me if you still feel like he has nothing worth saying to say. you cant judge a rapper based on his most popular stuff. they dumb down their lyrics to be more commercial, which is why people like soulja boy can make millions upon millions but incredibly intelligent rappers like common and talib kweli, while greatly respected, do not have huge hits.

Classical music stimulates the creative part of the brain. The only thoughts Lil wayne MIGHT provoke is how he got so famous, or if he thinks hes guitar playing is transcending his crappy music. REALLY repetitive music such as rap doesn’t stimulate anything but the imaginary trigger finger.

People who don’t about the SAT (quite a few exceptions though), don’t care about their future. So thus, generally speaking, people who listen to lil wayne who don’t care about the SAT are stupid for not caring. I tried placing myself into a ghetto rascals socks for a second, but stopped when I realized I was purposely trying to convert myself into an unproductive member of society.

have you ever thought about how good peoples memory must be if they can memorize a whole rap song with about 90 syllables for every 15 seconds. if that doesnt improve my memory then i dont know what does

        • Rap=Crap

Okay Mike lets not talk as if we were an expert in this field. Seriously think about it. Listening to lil wayne say “fo sheezy my kneezy she slobbed on my knob” will make you less intelligent than say, listening to a great musical arrangement by Bach or Brahms. Honestly, there is a correlation between intelligence and people who can play musical instruments. Lil Wayne doesn’t exactly use instruments unless you include instruments of violence like his 9mm he used to shoot police. I mean what the fuck? how is shooting police going to make you think?

I listen to a wide range of music there.
first off i wouldnt defy lil wayne as music, mumbling maybe.
today rap is absolute shit but the rap i listen to is tupac biggie smalls nwa eazy e. they talked real shit but this ‘lil wayne’ charachter going from ‘licking lollipops’ to ‘letting it rock’ i dont know what to think the music industry has gone to..
me playing piano and violin i listen to a good bit of classical music but i do find some of it enjoyable sure.
but my point is, if you want to defy ‘rap’ as ‘lil wayne’ then thats bullshit.

It is amazing, all music genres seem to be wide spread.
However, country and rap have tendancy to keep the lower edge.
And classical music the higher edge but as a tendancy only.

I say, intelligent people are open-minded, is this your case?

            March 15, 2009 at 10:06 am

          • Tom

Just so you know, even a retard can play piano. playing music has nothing to do with intelligence. music is about skill and passion. people play music with their hands and hearts, not with their brain. In addition, Lil wayne have one or two intelligent songs once in a while.

actually that’s a great assessment but studies have shown that different types of music do actually provoke different mind sets. for instance what has been laid out for us here. If one grows up to listen to music that is all about “fucking the haterz” and “shooting up bitches” then yes, studies do show that one will care a lot less about the SAT vs. Beethoven who has a very thoughtful and well organized composition created my many more minds than Lil’ Wayne. For more information on that go to http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/08/070801122226.htm .I had to respond to this cuz i’m doing a project on it sorry 🙂

        • Uneducated black kid

“I like lil wayne so i hate SAT’s.” You do realize that most kids that listen to rap music such as eminem, kanye, and lil wayne are usually rich white kids in connecticut because hip hop is the newest thing next to the electronic category. thats just how it is. the people who dont care about SAT’s are the ones that live in NYC who dont have an education, and those people would be shot if they were caught listening to somebody as lyrically bad as lil wayne instead of actual rap like Joey Bada$$ or something. Im going to guess that youre this nerd from ohio or something who hears rap and points out the mistakes they make like saying aint. you’d rather look up the meaning of correlation and causation then download music. if you didnt notice, beyonce, a pop singer at this time of the chart, is barely in front of lil wayne. so by what you just said, if you listen to beyonce, which is about 85% of people, then you dont care about what SAT’s. so do some research before you spend 5 hours trying to sound smart

          April 29, 2014 at 7:48 pm

      • Ben

I agree, but you seem to be having trouble with your grammar and spelling, so it wouldn’t matter in your case. For me however, I have been in music for 7 years, and without any study scored 1650 on the SAT.

        February 4, 2010 at 3:54 pm

        • John

If you’re talking about the old SAT, it’s out of 1600 and it’s not possible to get a 1650… The new one is out of 2400, and a 1650 is a pretty bad score. Either way, your point is invalid.

          August 2, 2010 at 2:14 am

        • Tom

are you talking about the old SAT or the new SAT? becuz for the old system the perfect score is just 1600. and if you scored 1650 in the new system you’re just straight up stupid. I scored 1900 without any study.

I don’t think listening to a particular type of music can make you smarter, but I have felt dumber after being subjected to rap and pop music, I think its more that people that are already smarter and like to stimulate their brain are more apt to listen to challenging music, and people with no attention span want repetitive brainless music.

        December 4, 2011 at 2:45 pm

    • bob

No it means that if you are white you are smarter. Being black and listening to Beethoven will not increase your IQ.

      February 28, 2009 at 1:40 am

      • I listen to lots of stuff on here, from the bottom up (but not classical… >.<). I did just fine.

I’m pretty sure it’s crap. The kids who listen to Beethoven are the rich, snotty little kids who go to private schools. Ah, stereotypes! But normal people just don’t listen to classical…

          March 1, 2009 at 3:47 am

        • I listen to Beethoven I am not rich nor snotty. I am smart. Your choice of music can affect you emotionally which in turn affects your school work study habits and influences. If people appreciate and understand music it wouldn’t be a problem at all. So be smart and optimistic stop judging.

          March 1, 2009 at 10:31 am

        • Kevin

Ummm, I am pretty normal and I listen to plenty of classical music. I work at a power plant as an operator. I have a wife and 2 kids, and I have a mortgage. Sounds pretty damn normal to me. I also listen to every other kind of music. A person’s intelligence cannot be rated by the music type they listen too. Although our perceptions of a person could change by the music they listen to. Anyways, whatever…

          March 2, 2009 at 1:18 am

        • Julia

Not all people who like classical music such as Beethoven are rich, snotty, or go to private school. My family has never had money and I myself attend a small poorly funded school yet still enjoy Moonlight Sonata (Beethoven) or Violin Concerto No. 5 (Mozart).

          March 2, 2009 at 5:22 am

        • Maddie

thats such BS! snotty little kids who go to private schools? not everyone who goes to a private school is snotty! thats like saying everyon at public school is stupid and poor.

        • JoJoJOEY

yeh, that is stereotyping! i go to a private school and beethoven is the thing NO ONE listens to!! NONE OF US have ANY classical music on our iPods!! But i do agree with the snotty rich people
because i’m not rich but i go to a private school…
          BUT anyway, just saying.

P.S.!! i was not offended by your comment, i was just ..y’know! spreading my opinion!! WOOHOO!!

          March 3, 2009 at 5:12 pm

        • Rap=Crap

Well your name fits you pretty damn well clueless. In no way am i a rich snotty kid. I am a middle class guy who has to pay his own way through college by actually being intelligent. Honestly I am quite “normal” thank you very much, I have a house and a girlfriend and we have a dog. how much more normal can you get? Seriously listening to lil wayne just makes you less of a person. Who wants to hear about fucking girls and shooting cops? O yeah I forgot, the uneducated minorities. And before you say I am a racist, just remember, all you have to do is go to school to be educated. And before you say we don’t all get the chance to go to school let me tell you that you are wrong there to. Public school is FREE, and anyone can easily go and get through gradeschool and highschool.

          March 9, 2009 at 10:53 pm

          • pheeeew. I can’t believe everyone is taking it so wrongly. I never meant that I thought that! I simply meant that that’s a simple stereotype about it! Lord… I listen to all types of music, from classical to metal and everything else. I’m pretty open to music and would never judge anyone by that. I was simply saying that a lot of people think that — I’m not one of them.

Wow… I go to a public high school in one of the poorest counties in the countries, and I’m an excellent student. I personally do not listen to Lil Wayne because I’m not a huge fan of his music. However, I wouldn’t judge people who do.

You know, earlier, you said that you don’t listen to classical, and then you said that you do when everybody was proving you wrong. What’s that say about you?

            February 4, 2010 at 4:03 pm

        • Hey! haha, I listen to classical music, and I also compose classical music for orchestra’s. I believe normal people do what they want. Who cares what music you listen to! I say listen to it, enjoy it, and think for yourself. The only connection music has to intelligence is how well the artist plays the game. Lil Wayne makes millions, I’d say he’s playing the game very well. Enter the Haggis, well…perhaps they are learning the rules to the game still. Point is, you listen to your tunes, I listen to mine. And as long as we don’t cause harm, we’ll get along just fine.

Black Guy-Listens to Classical without a problem. Your definition of normal is probably one of those High School Musical twists. Sorry, I just hate when people use the term normal for anything other than stating proven reality/unchanging, which is not human life at all. If you were to now define me as abnormal due to my speech, do understand…you would thus define normality as ignorance…sad way to life.

Actually there are other studies that refute what you just said….nothing to do with race by the way. Listening to classical, music i.e. certain composers (Bach, Chopin, Mozart, and Beethoven) DO increase brain activity, especially if listened to early in the morning….so it’s not that shocking to see these findings.

bob. you may be an idiot. maybe they should conduct a study on how many people named “bob” did well on their SATs… what do you think?

With genius comes insanity. (in Hitler’s case)

        • J

Are you kidding me? The damn valedictorian at my school is a total white supremacist. Not only that, but he scored a 1380 and was upset because he thought that he was inferior to white culture for not being perfect, so he took it again and scored a perfect 1400. Now I’m not saying this is admirable behavior, but your ignorance is ridiculously stupid chula.

I’m not racist either, but if you think all racists are naturally stupid you are so wrong on so many levels. So many intelligent people just honestly believe that minorities are inferior, but it doesn’t hinder their intelligence it just means their tolerance of minorities isn’t at its peak.

However, unless you want to consider the minorities that are racist (which seems to be an overwhelming amount), then I guess perhaps you may be right, but you’d be right for the wrong reason. You naturally assumed that white people that are racist are stupid, which is not necessarily true. But I can guarantee you every black person I’ve encountered and will encounter that throws out the phrase “Your a racist” will be the most idiotic person in that room.

Chula, you are such a big idiot it is ridiculous. Go die.

Oh and for all you stereotypical bastards about stupid public school people. Our valedictorian holds a 4.89 GPA, maybe higher. I as well hold a 4.30, and I am only barely within the top 100 of my class. So go screw yourselves if you say we are stupid, because we will both mentally and physically kick your asses.

          March 3, 2009 at 7:45 pm

          • What makes your minority statement more truthful than the other guys statement about white supremacists. You smart read you statements..its the pot calling the kettle black. You will never understand minorities(but you should still respect them),and minorities will never understand a white supremacist, but again sad but true should respect them.It is the “civilized” thing to do. Humans are the most inhumane species!!SAD!!

            • igni_renovatur

Actually top GPA depends on whether or not its weighted. If you are including Honors, and AP courses then top high school GPA would be 6.0, but that’s only achievable if one takes all AP courses in high school for all four years.

              October 21, 2009 at 8:33 pm

            • Ben

Top score for the SAT is 2400, not 1600. 800 for reading, writing, and math. Top GPA depends on where you are going to school. My school is based on a 4.0 scale, while other school districts may be based on a 5.0.

well i just want to say go and do some research……before the birth of all great composers from all over the world….ancient african/egyptian culture was already engaged in arts and music…..the dark ages took place in europe/carcus mountains….barbarians caves disease rape and plagues….once they regain their foot hold they went to another country and couldnt believe their eyes therefore they borrowed what they could then took the rest…..ignorance is bliss!

        Wow… That wasn’t racist at all…

Anywho, here’s a more accurate assessment:
Rap, hip-hop, and if you notice, jazz, and gospel are all on the lower end of this scale, yes? What do each of these genres have in common? They tend to be more popular among people of African-American descent. If you look at statistics, a large portion of African-Americans are on the lower end of the socio-economic spectrum. Because of this lack of money, (and other related reasons) they may not be able to receive a decent education. (Have you seen the American public school system? It’s a bloody joke.) In addition, but to a lesser extent, there are certain subcultures that revolve around many genres of music – rap being one of them, and as someone previously mentioned, many who are involved in the rap subculture don’t really care about the SATs.
In short: African-Americans (who make up a large portion of rap fans) tend to get less than satisfactory educations, which therefore lead to less than satisfactory SAT scores.

I, myself, listen to Bach, David Bowie, Coldplay, and the Beatles, but some of my favorite artists are Disturbed, P.O.D., Living Color and Alice Cooper. I am also a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist.

Well, White people in general are smarter just as Asian people in general are smarter than white people. Black culture doesn’t place much value on intelligence. There are MANY outliers but the overall trend shows.

How do you know? have you met most of the black people in america?

      • Teresa

“Black culture doesn’t place much value on intelligence.”

If this is so true, then why do we have a Black President that is smarter than our former White President?

        February 28, 2009 at 2:02 pm

        • Because Bush was dumb and most people would say “Obama is half white and raised by white people” It depends on family values, if the family values education you’ll be smart, if not well good luck to you.

          March 1, 2009 at 10:34 am

          • paige

“Because Bush was dumb”… this statement makes you sound incredibly ignorant. He actually was a very impressive president as far as war strategy goes. He took the reins when our country was in crisis. He may have made some economical errors, but every president has their flaws. And as far as Obama goes, you should know by now that he has his flaws as well. He is in People magazine and on the cover of tabloids more than he is in his office doing his job. And there are many people in this world that had families that do not value education and end up getting good grades at prestigious schools, so this cannot be said for everyone, or even most people. And just because your family does value education, does not mean you are smart. Haha you really think that? Intelligence is not just given to you. You have to work for it and many people are blessed with it regardless. I’m going to guess you don’t know very many people that do/have received higher education and succeeded…

Our so called intelligent black President thinks there are 57 states and that the automobile was invented in the U.S. Reading from a teleprompter does equate to intelligence. If this man is so intelligent, he would not be a socialist.

          March 1, 2009 at 5:10 pm

          • Josh

What does socialism have to do with intelligence? Greed is what has ruined socialism just like ignorance has ruined you!

Allen, the reason Obama is socialist is not because he is dumb, but because it will benefit blacks.

We do not have a black president. We have a mixed president. I won’t argue that he isn’t smarter though. Haha.

Most important note to make about your comment. You are trying to apply an individual to a generalisation. It doesn’t work that way. Outliers are quite real, and this chart wouldn’t show those, otherwise those bars for each artist and genre would probably stretch across the entire chart for each one.

Also, not to insult Mr. Obama, but that isn’t a terribly difficult feat. -_-‘

      • LMiller

        !! Easy people…

If you would allow me to restate Matt’s argument. To get an idea of the qualities that a population of people possess, you need only to look at the qualities that attract them to reproduce.

Having grown up as an expatriate in Asia, I’ve observed (again, this refers to the majority of Asians that I’ve met. I certainly have not met MOST Asians, and I need not to have met that many, Jaz. Because as long as I have met a number of Asians who are REPRESENTATIVE of the overall population, my observations are sound. Basic statistics) that the Asian culture does put tremendous value on education, career success, eloquence, mathematical skills, test scores, transcripts… etc. And these qualities in a man or a woman, actually appeal to the opposite sex in a sexual way. De facto. It’s truly dumbfounding the sexually attractive power of math in Asia. Boobs and butt don’t really cut it in Asia. I can say with UNcertainty that it’s because there isn’t much of either 😉

Now, with African Americans, you can ask yourself the same question–what qualities drive them to reproduce? Eloquence? Math skills? SAT scores? or physique? The way she dances, aka, get low on the dance floor? His size, aka, you know what I’m referring to!

I believe the conclusion and contrast here are clear. And dear Teresa, would you say St. Obama is your average black man next door? I thought so, and there you go.

        February 28, 2009 at 4:04 pm

        • LMiller

Just to clarify my previous comment, “to get an idea of the qualities that a population of people possess, you need only to look at the qualities that attract them to reproduce.” This is basic genetics, history of evolution.

More importantly, I think this Music vs SAT score graph is total bogus. For one, it’s damn difficult, next to impossible to obtain the unbiased statistics needed for generating this kind of claim. Plus, people listen to A LOT of different types of music. For example, me, I listen to Jay-z, Kanye, Maroon 5, The Killers, Muse, The Shins, Norah Jones, and Debussy. So what’s my score? the sum average of all that? BS.

          February 28, 2009 at 4:15 pm

          • igni_renovatur

I disagree. I believe that the graph may be quite accurate. Remember three things:

            1. This chart shows the *average* SAT scores. Probably only the inner two quartiles, excluding any outstanding outliers (also basic statistics).

            2. (or 1b.) One can’t really apply generalisations (statistics) to an individual with any guarantee. Remember, outliers and exceptions exist. Again, basic statistics.

            3. The artists and genres that were used in this study were favorites of the individuals surveyed, not every artist or genre that the they listened to. If you really wanted to compare yourself (since you shouldn’t use this to predict your score, there are hundreds of other variables, particularly grades, that impact the result more reliably) then you should decide your favorite artist or genre and see what the average score for those fans lies.

Wow. That’s not statistics, and that’s opinionated. And that’s basing all SAT scores, lifestyle and musical preference on sexual attraction. Probably not so probable.

          February 28, 2009 at 10:45 pm

        • amy

the idea that you and matt have above generalized what races and cultures value based on your experience of “observation” makes me sick to my stomach. your conclusions about the way things are in america is what’s wrong with america. these armchair statements about “most asians” and “what drives [african americans] to reproduce”.. how on earth can you type something like that? do you have any idea how ignorant you are?

please read a book. and stop saying such stupid things where people can read them.

          March 1, 2009 at 1:03 am

          • I do agree. Like I said before it is how you are raised by your family that determines most of your values.

            March 1, 2009 at 10:38 am

        • nakedwoadwarrior

Thank you LMiller for this. It is a brilliant observation. What I think people are misunderstanding from your post is that it is not a “racial” issue, but rather a cultural one. For instance, I know many white “rednecks” who are completely ignorant – practically mongoloid. I also know African Americans who are extremely intelligent and cultured. It is all centered around the American sub-culture they were raised in. People who grow up in impoverished circumstances, such as the ghetto, are more likely to be attracted to lavish display of wealth and the fantasy of a rich and powerful thug – thus they perpetuate their ill-fated circumstance by pursuing crime as a “get-rich-quick” scheme. The sort of music they listen plays a dual role in this. First of all they are drawn to rappers’ success because they feel a sympathy in their lyrics. Many rappers came from the ghetto and inner-city. They beat the system and got rich on their ability to rhyme and perform. But this music has a role in perpetuating crime and greed as well, as the lyrics often speak of such base matters as “pimpin'” “hustlin'” and beating down perceived enemies among other things. Unfortunately those most at risk for falling into this vicious cycle are minorities, however I know many white kids who are enamored just as much with this fantasy lifestyle as are some people of color.

I believe the issue is about association. We are who we associate with, and that includes what we listen to and watch. If our lives are engrossed with such trivial things as BET, MTV, hip-hop and Grand Theft Auto III then we will attract others to us who share similar trivial obsessions and our situations will not be bettered. However, if our focus in life is bettering ourselves through education and hard work, then we will attract like-minded fellows who will act as support for our positive habits and lifestyles.

I don’t believe there is anything wrong with any of the media or entertainment mentioned above in and of itself, it is more a matter of focus. Where we spend our energy, time and money is where we will be strong. I think more people, regardless of race, ethnicity or background should spend more energy and time focusing on bettering themselves and the world around them than on the newest edition of Low Rider Magazine or mooning over the latest CD by Kanye West.

I’m sorry but……What? Have you seen an females in animes? Are you truly suggesting that the males in Asia are checking out a girls math scores and not the girl? I don’t care if they are Asian or other wise the guy’s not looking for A’s he’s looking for double D’s. It’s sad but true and it’s the same for the girls.

Although, LMiller is also right in that Asians (at least Japanese, since they are the ones that I have had the most contact with – personal contact, not from solely watching anime) that intelligence *is* attractive, although, whether or not that attraction is sexual I do not know. It definitely seems to be.

Well maTT, to be differentiated from MAtt,
if that’s what you’ve observed personally, over a long period of time of being around whites, blacks, and Asians. Then, technically, sure. It doesn’t all have to sound so racist you know. I can restate exactly what you just said, and have it not come off even suggesting racism.

          February 28, 2009 at 4:19 pm

      • Juancho

Matt, are you serious? It is all about access to education. When people of any background have access to good educational systems, they thrive and they value their education. Good educational systems are almost always tied into how much money the schools receive. Unfortunately, black and brown people tend to get the short end of the stick when it comes to their K-12 educational opportunities (underfunded schools, lack of books and materials, etc.). It’s really unintelligent to make blanket statements about entire ethnicities the way you did above.

        March 1, 2009 at 2:42 pm

      • igni_renovatur

Actually the reason that Asians are “smarter” than Americans, is because, as I mentioned before, the American education system is a joke. Students in Japan, India, and China actually get taught. (By the way, if you don’t believe me about the American education system, I had a friend from Brazil who could divide eight digit numbers in his head in less than 48 seconds (we timed it one day), and he wasn’t the only one in his class. Only two of his high school classmates took 1 minute and 42 seconds. Show me how many American college grads can divide two eight digit numbers without a calculator.)

        October 21, 2009 at 8:07 pm

Asians are not smarter, only the smartest, most succesful asians out of billions are allowed to imigrate into the better “white” countries so obviously they will outperform the average person.

You should never be ashamed of who you are.

          March 2, 2009 at 2:06 am

    • That’s the short version.

The long version is, the SAT is a culturally biased test – written by middle class White professionals to be taken by the sons and daughters of middle class White professionals.

Not only is it culturally biased towards affluent European Americans, but that same demographic have the money to send their kids to extensive SAT prep classes – so they get an even greater unfair advantage.

The person who came up with this “study” wanted to cover up for that White bias – so they twisted the study by asking the wrong questions.

It’s not about musical preference, but about institutionalized racism.

      March 1, 2009 at 11:52 am

      • Kevin

If you would have read the article, the “study” is not a study at all. It is a statistical breakdown based on Facebook data. It really has no bias one way or the other.

        March 2, 2009 at 2:09 am

      • Alissa

I would have to disagree with you. The sast is written by professionals to test teens based on the things they should have learned in high school. If you now the basics you’ll past no matter what race you are and where your from. SAT prep classes aren’t just avaiable for rich kids. It also avaliable free for anyone who wants them. Anybody has the chance to study, get a grade on them, and go to the college of their choice. This study has nothing to do with “racism.” What it has to do with is how music influences people’s mind negatively or positively. Certain rap songs have repitive, derespectful, and explict content that influences the brain and people want to be like the people on these videos. The problem is they can’t always be. Music influences you to do thing based on what you see and here. Music like classical make you think and people who like classical arae highly intelligent people. Just like people who refuse to listen to rap music that I call grabage. Certain songs that you listen to like rock can influence you to kill yourself and other types of music make you want to drink, smoke and have sex. Being in African American teen myself in the public school system I think what you listen to influences how you approach different things in your life and how. Ifyou listen to music you get addicted to it and if its bad music you become he lyrics and start to be what the songs say your suppose to be.

yo not for one minute i agree with just listening to “white people music” is smarter…but you got to admit “white people music” is alot more creative than 85% of all black rap music. seriously look at the creativity put into videos? all rap music do is glorify cars, some dumb ass women, some alcohol, clicks and cities that care nothing about the people who rep. them. matter of fact as being black we the only race in america that has no type of flag to fly or culture to live and die by. now if where we discussing krs 1 or wu tang..some entertainers who would have you listening repeatedly to gain insight on what they are talking about that would be different…..so i am black and i been saying for years that some rap music dull your senses..lil wayne..i am from louisiana and i remember when he first came out..yes the dude has grown but seriously he still suck half of the time that sizzurp got his ass moving like screw music….yo we should take this as a lesson and “WAKE UP”

What’s White People music? I am a white person whom scored over 1200 on my SATs and I love Hip Hop. I also listen to a lot of other stuff on this list. Maybe a better way to corelate Music Taste to SAT scores would be view SAT score vs. Diversity of Music Listened to and enjoyed by the test subject?

The SAT is socio/economicaly bias anyway.

I go to a university with 80% white students and THEY are the ones that are listening to rap music. And I’m not talking about the so called “wiggers”, I’m also talking about sorority girls that have long blond locks of hair with blue eyes and the All-American jocks. Every black person I know listens to alternative.

Research has even found that it’s caucasians that make the rap industry prosper. So you should check your facts before you make generalizations based off of the fact that the majority of rappers are black. The race of a recording artist does not determine the race of their audience. 😉

How about the possibility that rap is garbage. Not because of who performs it, but because it has no real meaning. Sure, you can argue that their are certain songs that hold significant social commentaries, but the are few and far between. I don’t think it is because the performers are African American, but rather the performers just don’t have a clue. Now, if you look at The Temptations, Barry White, Dizzy Gilespie, and many, many other African American musicians, true musicians, I bet the SAT score range of people liking that music would be more in the 115+ range.

So people can’t dislike rap music without being bigots? Darn and here I thought that the liking and/or disliking of a genre of music was a way of expression but I guess I was wrong. “Well I better throw out my Beethoven and go buy some lil wayne right now or else I may just become a klansmen!”

The overwhelming majority of mainstream music in general is garbage. That’s why most of the rap you’ve heard is bad, because you’ve never been exposed to all of the good rap and hip-hop. There is equally as much crap “white music” that exists that will rot your brain. How is crap like Fallout Boy supposed to be any better than Lil’ John? And people like Jason Mraz? Creed? Avril Lavigne? Pure crap.

Have you ever tried programming an Akai MPC1000 sampling station/syntesizer? It takes a lot more skill and creativity than you can imagine to use it well.
Have you ever listened to the Roots? Aceyalone? Common? Talib Kweli? Atmosphere? Aesop Rock? Jurassic 5? The Fugees? J Dilla? Madlib? Cody Chesnutt? Prefuse 73?

These groups are real artists and musicians. Whatever musician you claim to be, I have no respect for you if you claim you “hate hip-hop” simply because you’re ignorant of what to listen to. You can’t be a real musician without acknowledging the origins of modern music in blues, soul, gospel, and jazz.

Anyone who blindly says “all rap is crap” is ignorant and probably racist.

Thanks for the recommendations! I have been hoping to find some Hip Hop music that strikes a chord for me. I listen to many genres, but have always had a problem with mainstream musics’ lack of true musicality, and usually defer to alternative sources. Mainstream, popular music, is created to find a common denominator, and thus is a simplified listening experience.

Also, remember, music often creates a setting for an activity. I for one would find it hard to study while listening to heavy metal, or classical marches. However, these might be appropriate for soldiers going into battle. In the 20th century we became used to being bombarded with multiple genres at often inappropriate times. I believe this is a contributing factor in the short attention spans we have all developed.

I think this thread would be better served if more attention were directed to the discovery of inspiring music, across all genres, rather than dragging the demons we all harbor in our deepest subconscious to the surface. Racism is in us all, and is a remnant of our prehistoric origins and should be squelched. Music is meant to bring us together not to divide us.

Rap and Hip Hop is poetry set to music, maybe they aren’t musicians in the traditional sense of the word, but they are artists (in most cases) none the less.

It has nothing to do with what color you are, it has to do with there actually being instruments and singing!!! I give the screaming speed metal guys more credit than rappers, because at least the TRY and play an instrument, any fool can rhyme words. just by making the statement “white people music” shows your “true colors”

    February 27, 2009 at 2:46 pm

    • Opivy101

You do realize those “screaming speed metal guys”are actually amazing at what they do.Metal takes extremely high instrumental and vocal skills to play.
On topic:yeah its not about “race”(you think people would be over that by now). Its just a stupid study that i hardly believe its true

Rich CT, I find it interesting that you lump rap and hiphop together, and that you believe it is definitely on the low end. Obviously you have never heard any hip hop that was not on the radio or tv. Hip hop artists you may want to check out so your “true colors” comment doesn’t seem so racist.

Immortal Technique, Talib Kweli, Mos Def…go on youtube and listen to some songs by all of these and then say that anyone can rhyme words. These people have high intellect and it shows in their MUSIC.

      February 28, 2009 at 10:38 pm

    • Have you ever listened to Deaf Poetry, its a show and people come up and say(speak) their poem to the audience and most of them listen to hip hop and rap but what you’re thinking of is the mainstream crappy music that is seen on t.v and heard on local radio stations. Try and relate smartness with family values which therefore determines musical influence.

Maybe you should try taking an music appreciation class, it will show you if a person appreciates all music then they will be smarter. Even in Lil Wayne’s case, you could learn to appreciate that he is a well known artist and that people who are into physically sexual appeal enjoy that music.

      March 1, 2009 at 10:47 am

  4. yippiekayay

Please don’t put all rap into the same category (Wayne is pop, by the way). Hip hop music is one of the main ways I learned English when growing up. I think it’s especially good because of all the rhymes, so if you know one word, you can maybe guess the next in line. What I listen to isn’t that dumbass, Lil Wayne, it’s much more intelligent people.

it’s called demographics ppl.. if u look at the typical demographic of the people who listen to whatever music, then u can probably surmise their access to better education… this is then reflected in their SAT scores… it’s not really about the music.. it’s about the demographics

    February 27, 2009 at 2:59 pm

It has nothing to do with color/class/race/status etc. What I believe it corresponds to is how academic you are with your music. Beyond instant enjoyment, some music listening requires a certain amount of active intellectual participation; not just passive listening.

Hip Hop music isn’t the only music towards the bottom. I see The Used and Nickelback pretty close to that too. Kelly Clarkson lurks low as well. These are the listeners who are less likely to have intellectual conversations or are informed about things other than sports, reality tv and pop culture. I’m sure these people aren’t watching Goddard or Herzog films either. And I would also bet the last book they read (on their own) was either The DaVinci Code or Harry Potter. Maybe Twilight.

To be fair on the book front, a lot of geeks read Harry Potter and The DaVinci Code, so they don’t necessarily correlate with low SAT scores or intelligence. The last book I read was Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban…the one before that was A Brief History of Time. And I got a 1590 on my SATs.

      March 1, 2009 at 10:51 am

    • John,

      Your privilege is showing.

The SATs are all about race, color, class and status.

The very purpose of the Scholastic Aptitude Test is to ration out higher education – with the demographic that monopolizes college education (upper class Whites) getting certain special advantages to guarantee that their offspring will be at the head of the line.

That’s why the SATs are culturally biased towards White middle class culture – and that’s why all those SAT prep programs exist, which are only affordable for upper class Whites (and upper class Asians – who are heavily assimilated among upper class Whites to begin with).

Why not just admit the truth?

      March 1, 2009 at 11:59 am

      • Julia

What’s with you Gangbox? Your just full of angst filled conspiracies against white people and the SAT s. You know not all white people are rich and not all black people are poor right? And the reason SAT prep programs are expensive isn’t to root out all the black people but simply because extra classes for anything is expensive and they are trying to make a profit. What people need sells and most people need or at least want to be prepared for the SAT s. You can claim that its biased but it’s based on what you’ve learned through out your life and last time I checked the black kids learn the same things in school as the white kids.

        March 2, 2009 at 6:30 am

        • ConsciousBlackWoman

          Not necessarily true Julia.

I am a mother whose 6 year old recently began elementary school. Now, my daughter was attending a predominately white school in her father’s district at first. Their focus was more on reading and building critical thinking skills, where now because of circumstances she is attending a predominately black school, where their focus is not nearly as much on reading as it is on math, but when she comes home, her homework looks more like busy work rather than the enforcement of what she learned for the day.

I definitely see the difference in education when it comes to demographics of the environment. Now in both schools my daughter has maintained the status of being top of her class. We don’t necessarily listen to all of Lil Wayne’s songs due to explicit lyrics, but we enjoy some hip hop, as well as R&B, neosoul, Afican, Reggae, Pop, Latin, Light Classical, Soundscapes, etc….you get where I am going with this.

I am actually in the middle of a paper speaking on the differences of negative and positive music. Now I do agree, there is a lot of hip hop that spits out garbage, but then there is a lot of hip hop that empowers, not to mention the cross bred genres such as gospel hip hop spreading a peaceful msg of Christ. But I said all of that to say, we can’t say white or black music, it’s about what is being said. I have documented children killing people under the influences of music (and drugs or chemical imbalances) and it came from other genres besides rap. One of the songs was a heavy metal song about a guy talking about his fantasies of killing his dad, and this 17yo kid goes and kills his dad after an argument.

So people really have to get of the race kick, it’s more of the mental capacity of how well you can manage yourself rather than being sucked in as a sheep, and follow what you hear.

You really need to get out more, and stop letting that brainwashing box called a t.v. distort your judgement. Actually, you find crack in the inner cities because it’s the cheap stuff, it is the white suburban children and their parents who can afford the heavy expensive stuff. You can google that. 😉

Matt really crazy statement. Its not a black thing its a poverty thing. Silly response.

    February 27, 2009 at 3:33 pm

    • CPCris

It has nothing to do with poverty, it has a lot to do with how you are raised or in the case of most kids in poverty, not raised. Being poor does not make you stupid, but having parents or a parent raising you and never bothering to ask if you have homework, or a test to study for, can!!!

      February 27, 2009 at 9:56 pm

      • CPCris,

Poverty is not caused by individual stupidity.

It’s caused by the natural functioning of the capitalist system.

Capitalism rations goods and services – the few at the top who run society get more than their fair share, while those at the bottom live in want and privation, and those in the middle get just enough to get by.

Education, intelligence of the lack of either have nothing to do with any of that – just look at George Bush, an absolute moron who had the good luck to be born superrich!

        March 1, 2009 at 12:03 pm

        • matt

Geez. You sound like you have taken one too many college courses taught by ultra socialist profs.

Gangbox, look at your computer monitor. That’s capitalism baby. Some ‘greedy’ guy decided he was going to produce something from his hardwork and education (real education like engineering not bullshit like humanities) and in return expects someone to work hard and produce something else of value. Capitalism does not ration anything, it produces wealth and rewards those who are willing and able to produce. Without capitalism there wouldn’t be any room for altruism and charity because no wealth would be produced.

If you really hate capitalism I beg you don’t consume another product, good or service, made with capitalist sensibilities in mind. You’ll have to go without food, shelter, clothing, medicine, computers, automobiles, movies, music, books, instruments, beds, couches, chairs, iPods, taxis, gyms, restaurants, toiletries, and many millions of other things. Even the poor in america have access to these things (yes even medicine, through charity and government programs), which is more than can be said for the poor in Cuba, North Korea, Pol Pot’s Cambodia, Vietnam, and China.

Now I wonder how far the world would have come based solely on the tears of the socialists and communists crying for “equality” and “justice”.

Um not to be uppity but the World Health Organization’s ranking of Cuba was the 39th best just barely losing to America’s 37 place so the poor in Cuba actually do get around the same care as the poor in America. (a little fun fact for the day).

Most people don’t just listen to one artist though, so it’s pretty silly. I listen to everything on that chart from T.I. to Beethoven so what does that mean.

Somewhat strange is the fact that Lil’ Wayne actually gets really reviews from music mags like Pitchfork, so you’d think that he wouldn’t rank so low. Personally I hated Tha Carter III, but I don’t think it has anything to do with my SAT score.

And anyways, one of my med school classmates is a Harvard grad and like the biggest Lil’ Wayne fan ever.

I suspect that since most people listen to multiple artists it’s just the few people who only listen to a few artists skewing the numbers off. Like the 10 really dumb people who listen to Lil’ Wayne and the one guy on campus who listens to Beethoven.

Lil Wayne is not “Black” music. There is no such thing as that nowadays… If all race of people didn’t buy his music he wouldn’t have sold all those albums.

    February 27, 2009 at 6:39 pm

  16. Ania

I agree that it has to do with poverty. It’s very difficult for any child of any race to be thinking of sat’s when there’s nothing to eat at home. I myslef loved listening to everything from gospel to classical music. I too had to learn the language when I first came here and I did this by listening to ‘oldies’ my parents had cranked up on the radio. I still don’t understand how music can make you dumb? I played two different instruments in h.s, many of us did. If you’re lucky you still play but it in no way makes you dumb. The rhyming is not just a ‘rap’ thing, most music lyrics rhyme and the song flows better. Just like the words complement eachother then the notes do as well. The chart is dumbfounding because I didn’t do so great on my Sat’s and I highly doubt music was a factor in me not doing great. Music was& always will be there to give me a hand with the daily grind.

    February 27, 2009 at 6:46 pm

  17. dubya

I think it says that if you listen to black people music you are probably dumb. And that if you are smart you probably like stupid music because you have so much feelings but no rhythms.

    February 27, 2009 at 6:47 pm

    • Jackson

      READ IN FULL:

It says nothing about the supposed correlation of listening to “black people music” and being dumb. Just by stating “Lil Wayne” as an example does not make it all “black people music”. Ever heard of Louie Armstrong or John Coltrane? I’m sure the folks that listen to these guys would score higher than average. The reason?….

The majority of the population tends to like music that is of a 4/4 rhythm, between 100-60 beats per second, with simple lyrics and preferably is made of a I,IV, V or other similar progression. Music that falls in this category consists of familiar and harmonious vibrations that do not “disturb” the AVERAGE listener.

Music that contains diverse progressions and dissonant notes, such as Jazz and Classical, often require an ear that can correctly interpret the notes being heard and can appropriately register to the brain that it is a “pleasing sound”. Similar to developing a taste for a food or wine….this interpretation can grow more efficient if exposed more often. That’s why it is good for children to absorb as much diverse music as a child.

Unfortunately….the “average” music industry does not cater to the ABOVE AVERAGE LISTENER. Instead, it churns out “factory hits” for the masses, the averages, and the below averages because the industry knows (through similar tests such as above) that this is the majority of humans listening levels.

Plus, obviously there is an average intelligence level….

A similar study may read something like this….

STUDY SHOWS LINK BETWEEN INTERESTS AND SAT SCORES.
Recent studies have shown that students who are interested in Nuclear Physics and Decolonizing Methodologies tend to score higher SAT Scores than students who are interested in “The Bachelor” and “Real World MTV”.
      Blah, blah, blah, blah…………

  22. Where is Immortal Technique?

    February 27, 2009 at 8:12 pm

  23. There is a mean and standard deviation on the SAT, that is recalculated for every new edition of the test. Usually the subtest mean is about 500 with a standard deviation of about 100. That means that the average score on the modern SAT isn’t even represented in this study, because the modern SAT average score is about 1500. I know this because I was in the last group to take the old SAT, and in the pilot group to take the new SAT. The chances of the mean score being less than 1450 is less than .1%. Therefore, either the study is wildly outdated or fraudulent, designed just to piss people off and start controversy. My guess is the latter.

Also, the collection methods are incontrovertably unscientific, and this is a matter of correlation. According to Mr. Griffith, this is enough in this case. He is a computer scientist. With computers you can see the results, look at the logs, and find out why effect X correlates with result Y. I am a psychologist. When you deal with real people, you need to provide a stimulus and observe the behavior to understand what causes the result, which makes it much harder for us to get accurate results and have more research into experimental methods and controls than actual behavioral data, in most cases. The moral? We are more careful.

Furthermore, it is just as racist to assume that white people like music style X and black people like music style Y. All of my friends, regardless of race, have diverse musical tastes, and every single one of them has sophisticated reasons for liking what they do like and disliking what they dislike. The only people who believe that there is such a thing as _insert_race_ specific music are the ones who never gave it a chance.

Finally, the SAT has a long history of bias based on “something correlating highly with ethnicity.” Until the 1970’s, bigotry was an American legal institution. This affected schooling, employment, housing, basic medical care, Hell, people, American scientists deliberately left syphilis untreated in dozens of black men in Tuskegee, Alabama, which has a direct, observable, degenerative affect on cognition. Bigots can be clever, and overbalance the system in their own favor.

From the way I see it, the possibility of you being a retard is significantly higher than the rest of us. The scale on this graph is obviously according to the old SAT, which is out of 1600. As for yourself, 1850 out of 2300 is nothing to brag about.

also, i think the this chart is messed up because the Beethoven scores could be inflated by how many people actually list themselves as Beethoven listeners.

For instance, if this thing goes by popularity. Far Far more people listen to lil’ wayne than Beethoven; so its going to have a greater diversity in people who listen. Poor and rich, white and black, well educated to not very well educated…compared to Beethoven which is probably mostly listened to by, lets face it, middle upper class white people who have had good to great education in their lives.

But anyways what all this means is that the celtic fans are really metally challenge cause how could they get confuse and say Kobe Bryant is the MVP then turn around and say their own Paul Pierce is MVP. . . so it explains since they listen to his dying cow lil wayne means the Boston Celtic fans are Retarded!

This chart is not a race thing and is about as inaccurate as the local weather report. First of all, to all those complaining that all the “black” music is at the bottom, did you not notice jazz and classical are right down there at the lower end with the rap? Ludacris is higher than classical, LOL. Beethoven is the only classical music at the top of the chart. Besides, where was this study conducted? I know PLENTY of intelligent people who listen to rap. I also know plenty of intelligent people who don’t listen to classical, but some really weird alternative music.

And to the people taking this as just another opportunity to take racists shots or try to lump all blacks into this group of welfare receiving, big rims on loud cars driving, ignorant, crime committing, drug abusing, education avoiding misfits….well, it just shows we have REALLY stupid, dumb, ignorant, clueless people of ALL races out there. Learn more about a race than what your limited exposure or the nightly news shows you. You’re actually viewed as violent murdering brutes by a large portion of the world. I’m sure you don’t feel you are the devil most of the non-white world views you as. However, their opinions of you are formed from limited sources such as the news and propaganda, (just like yours). Some of the very countries that Americans think are so violent, and are scared to death to visit, actually think America is WORSE.

Wow, this comments thread is so full of failure, it’s almost hilarious.

The guy behind this “study” created a correlation and nothing more. He didn’t attempt, or imply, any sort of causation. Need I link to this graph:

As any pastafarian is familar with, causation and correlation are not always related.

Furthermore, the study was done using average school scores and that statistical method alone voids all sort of anecdotal evidence (“I like Lil Wayne, but I got a 1500!”) because it’s about statistical averages. And as is the case with statistics, there are deviations on either side of the spectrum here.

  51. While I did have a hearty chuckle off of this study, there do seem to be real bizarre inconsistencies on this chart. I’ll address them one by one.

    1. While some people got named (like Lil Weezy), some entries are entire genres. 12 rows down, in the upper 900’s, you’ll find a bubble for classical. Beethoven is classical. See the problem?

    2. While we’re on this genre thing, jazz, which is 8 rows down and in the lower 900’s, seems a bit preposterous to me. I mean seriously, if we’re talking about Kenny G, I’d believe it. If we’re talking about Charlie Parker, I’m gonna have call bullshit on that.

    3. There is a similar problem with techno, 6 rows down in the early 1000’s. Adam Beyer would be believable, but Aphex Twin would not. His stuff is every bit as complicated as Classical music.

Which brings me to point 4. If musical complexity is to be the deciding factor, then I’ve got some real bad news. Beethoven, though I thoroughly enjoy his work, is not the most musically complex composer out there. Liszt and Bach would give him a run for his money any day of the week. On the flip side, there’s plenty of hip-hop that is more idiotic than Lil Wayne. Bump a Soulja Boy track, and find out what I mean. That sucka makes Wayne look like Rakim.

SAT’s are about as worthless as IQ tests.

    February 28, 2009 at 1:16 pm

    • Schnittke

“Aphex Twin would not. His stuff is every bit as complicated as Classical music.”

It is not even close. You would only say this if you had no understanding of classical music. Even someone as mildly daring as Aphex Twin pales in comparison to the complex electronic experiments that classical composers like Karlheinz Stockhausen brought to life. The fact that classical pieces are many times the length of an Aphex piece alone should be a clue as to the actual complexities involved.

“Beethoven, though I thoroughly enjoy his work, is not the most musically complex composer out there.”

Then you are not listening to the correct Beethoven. The works of Ludwig van Beethoven are among the most complex musical masterpieces ever penned. Musicologists and theorists are still baffled by pieces such as the Grosse Fugue. The third symphony, a work which nearly single-handedly heralded the Romantic movement in classical music, is designed with such intense brilliance that the thematic material allows for endless variations. And don’t even get started on the piano music…The Moonlight sonata, while deceptively benign, is one of the most complex challenges, and reconfigurations to sonata form ever penned.

I highly suggest switching to this Beethoven, the one you are listening to must be an imitator of some sort.

Or perhaps you do not actually listen to classical music. But you should not make such inane statements which might mislead innocent persons in a public forum.

Ok…so, yes, much of the music by African American artists is to the left on the chart and much of the music by white artists is to the right on the chart. But what about thinking about this less as a “dumb” thing and more of a problem with the SAT. Standardized tests are notorious for their problems with being skewed towards one particular cultural base (generally the dominant one) with little regard for other ways of thinking, knowing, and being. I think this chart says more about the failure of the SAT than anything about personal smartness.

“It’s called correlation. All this study shows is a correlation…” <– this is correct. All this study says is:

    1. people who like the classical genre-did “better” on the s.a.t.
    2. the s.a.t. is said to be culturally bias anyway, [ in most aspects] with one exception… math, which of course, is universal.

In my opinion, all great artists, no matter the genre, should be RESPECTED. Im not a fan of Mozart, but I respect him & his work. Having said that, I can’t understand how someone can consider Lil Wayne’s [or any other successful rappers’] music “garbage”.

My advice is this… goto a club, take a couple of tequila shots, and tell the dj to play Lil Wayne’s “Got Money” ft. T-Pain, I’ll bet you have a little fun… if nothing else.

Lil Wayne is extermely popular street rap. In the streets of a tough neighborhood, you can get shot, stabbed… robbed, etc.

Beethoven is a dead guy who composed music with no lyrics in a time where there were no cars, no 808’s. No electric guitars, no athiests, no strippers, no Myspace, no thongs, no spandex.

No high energy strip club music… No captivating artists. Face it, it’s really hard to rap Lil Waynes complex lyrics and read a book at the same time. You can hum Beetoven, right?

Actually i don’t think it’s necessarily a matter of what music you listen to. Lil’ Wayne is popular right now, and this chart was made while he is still popular. It’s usually the mindless sheep who just follow whoever is popular at the time. When he loses popularity, the average of IQ of people who listen to him will probably be higher up the chart. At the same time, whoever is the new popular figure in music will likely attract all of the mindless people, and even though it may or may not be good music, the masses of people will cause the average IQ of people who listen to him/her to drop.

Actually I think there is some legitimacy to this survey…

Typically, the musical structure in songs from Lil Wayne and Beyonce is very simplistic. It’s usually composed of very basic rhythms and very repetitive words and rhyme schemes. Bethoven’s music is highly composed – many instruments playing a host of non-repetitive pattern. Basically, simple music is boring to intelligent minds, and empty minds can’t understand complex music.

Race intrinsically has nothing to do with it; however, we are still experiencing racial desegregation, even though the legality has been dealt with far in the past. There are major cultural differences between races in this country, and while I hate that fact, it is still true. White or black people aren’t smart or stupid, but cultures are. I know white people who are geniuses and white people who are just morons, and the same for my African American friends.

I don’t think this study shows music that makes you dumb so much as what music dumb people listen to…

your IQ or SAT scores have nothing to do with the music you listen to. i personally never took the SAT’s. but when i was in 1st grade i scored a 138 on an IQ test administrated by my school psychologist. i still have the test results. i then went on to fail 3rd grade. switched schools a few times, and went to a few summer schools because of my poor grades. i hated school, felt bored with it, felt bored with the people around me, didn’t try, and my parents didn’t give a shit how bad i did.
i grew up on rap. i grew up listening to Ice Cube, Biggy, Tupac, Dr. Dre, NWA. I am also white. And i don’t drink, smoke, or do any drugs. and i never have.

and I did alright on the SATs, but I know tons of people that listen to mostly rap and have waaay better SAT scores then I got. The music you listen to doesn’t necessarily mean your good at taking tests or that your not as smart or smarted than others. That depends on how well you comprehend. :]

  100. are you serious! Although I tend to agree listening to classical music might have a correlation to a high SAT score but that necessarily isn’t the case. Tell me what “normal” teen listens to classical music? Listening to Lil Wayne doesn’t make you dumb. It’s your choice to learn, study, practice, etc. A lot may have to do with the environment the teens are in etc….What really is dumb is that we are arguing about this damn “survey”…hahaha

WOW everyone has taken this way out of context! It does not mention race, background, or location in this at all. It is based entirely on music. How can someone say it’s because of race at all? I know tons of white people who LOVE lil wayne and I know black people who LOVE U2. Everyone is getting so worked up over this being racist when it is only music. If you want to bring race into it, find a study that does music and race. This isn’t assuming everyone who listens to Lil Wayne comes from a poor family that can’t afford SAT prep. It says nothing AT ALL about where anyone is coming from in this. Dumb people are everywhere. Smart people are everywhere. This is about types of music. Everyone should try and not jump on the “this is so racist” bandwagon all the time and take this for what it is.

  113. I don’t think this is a very informative comparison. If you want to add to it the economic status/schools attended by the same students I think you might find it a bit more enlightening.

An upper middle to upper class student attending a posh private school is more likely to listen to Beethoven or Monteverdi or even Ben Folds than say a student that has attended public school in an inner city or somewhere in the sticks.

first of all, Ludacris said at a show in Vegas that if it wasn’t for his white fans then he wouldn’t have sold millions of records. you can’t have bling, unless white america is into your thing.

second of all, since i didn’t invest my time in the study, i dont believe or trust it.

    3. it’s really just a select few that are smart. that list and the people on this msg board are mutually exclusive. and dont think im not aware of my own stupidity. it’s like joe rogan said “i know im stupid. and yet….most of the people i meet are more stupid than me”.

    4. im of the opinion that almost everyone has some kind of intelligence. i know a down syndrome kid who draws blueprints of ships and airplanes, and he’s not a savant or anything. im not sure if i believe completely what im about to say, but to me the ability to survive in a given social system is my definition of intelligence. the questions from tha definition arise when you ask yourself, “what does it mean to survive?” is it having happiness? a full family? a lot of money? a lot of shit? ability to have leisure? food, clothing, shelter. does eating chicken mean u score lower on the SATs than eating bologna? haha. absurd and silly discussion. mainly because i dont identify with my race, my gender, my culture, my homo sapien sapien brothers and sisters. i feel completely isolated and annoyed with the fact that i dont understand or like the stereotypes that i typify. at least a study like this makes people feel more connected in that they all know who lil wayne is and have sociologically general opinions on the consequences of highly personal opinions on the attractiveness of the music of lil wayne. what is it even to like something? like the beat? like the scales? like the progression? like the way it makes you feel or think? who gives a fuck.

I hope this helps. Its as simple as this. It’s saying that smart people tend to listen to classical music because like there brains it is multi-layered and direct. For each layer of the mind there is something in the music to latch on to and take a part. Where as lil wayne, as well as most other hip-hop tells you what they want you to hear( hints not need or reason to think). Race, up bringing or none of that other crap has anything to do with it. You hear what you like. And just in case you were wondering ( not that it matters) but i’m black.

This is just telling us something we already know in a new, stupid way.

Lil wayne-MOSTLY gangsters and wangsters, whom we have already identified as underachievers.

Third eye blind,alternative/rock-Mostly middle class white people who we already know to (generally) value school more and and do better in school.

Beethoven-Sheltered nerds who only know studying and achieving, who OBVIOUSLY get good SAT scores.

Everyone (should have) already realized this for themselves. What kind of music you listen to dosent make you smart, it just reflects what kind of person you are.

Two night ago I was probably the only black female in the Pit at SLIPKNOT concert. INCUBUS is my favorite band in the world because I believe their lyrics and music is ‘soul awakening’ and tickles my brain in multiple ways I cannot describe. Follow closely by AVENGED SEVENFOLD, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, CHEVELLE, BREAKING BENJAMIN, PANTERA, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, METALLICA, etc. I guess you’re picking up that I love rock.
I like all types of music EXCEPT rap. Lil Wayne annoys me senseless; all the while being my brother’s favorite. We are of the same mother and father. (divorced… and yes, he was around to be a dad.)

Was in Debate all of high school, AP classes, Graduated with Honors, yada yada. Yet I was a slacker and didn’t study for the SAT so I got a 1260 out of 1600 (Eh, shit happens.) I don’t remember what my brother got on his; let’s just say we were just glad he graduated.

It seems to me that it is not necessarily the music itself, nor the complexity of what is being heard. Rather the combination with a mind that dissects the information being given. For there will always be exceptions to the ‘rules’. Even Lil Wayne has interesting and thought provoking points in his music. I just don’t care to listen to it because I think it licks balls. Also remember that the SAT is Scholastic. It doesn’t yield itself to different aspects of intelligence such as artistic, musical, interpersonal, emotional, heck even survival intelligence as mention in an earlier post.

I recognize there are societal and financial situations/categories that lessen or intensify the challenges faced concerning Quality of Life and Education. Poverty/Wealth, Rural/Urban, Encouragement or lack thereof, and natural ability all play roles in the persons ability to score high on ‘the most important test of your life.’ That is something I hope will improve over time, then hopefully both sides can quit being ignorant.

White people refer to me as “the whitest black girl they ever met.”
Black people refer to me as “the whitest black girl they ever met.”
-Because I use the English language with proper pronunciation and grammar, and I listen to “white people music.” I am me: Robbin. I refuse to believe intelligence is synonymous with white. Refuse to believe it is limited to color, status, money, wizards and elders. An individual’s relationship with music may help define him as a PERSON, give guidance, enlightenment, and pleasure. Choice of music should not blindly stereotype into a race of people.

LIFE HAS NO REGRET, SKY HAS NO LIMIT, MUSIC HAS NO COLOR.
It may have different genres, white musicians, black musicians, deaf muscians, simple and complex varieties. Red, Green, and Gray Albums. Music just is. People’s preferences aren’t dictated by race, sex, age. Achievements not dictated by circumstance.

“….be sure man that every line drawn reflected a life that you loved
not an existence that you hated…
I’m sick of painting it black and white
my pen is dry, now I’m uptight
So sick of limiting myself to fit your definition.”
    (INCUBUS- ‘Redefine’)

This study is compared to SAT Scores and not your IQ, intelligence, or street smarts. It is also not a scientific study because it’s just some dude taking a bunch of data from Facebook and Myspace and comparing SAT scores to music the person listens to. It’s basically a JOKE. you guys take it so seriously..

Some people don’t take the SATs nor care about them and are still very smart. Some people have a good head on their shoulders and are street smart and can survive better in the real world then those who are book smart. It’s all in how your life works…some benefit from book smarts and others street smarts.

Both types are smart in their own way and I think we should stop judging who is and is not smart. If the creator of this study was smart then he would know that his own study is a pile of NONSENSE!!! The end.

If you know anything about the bands that coincide with the higher test scores you’ll simply note that the music is far more complex that the stuff that’s at the lower end of the spectrum. All the super simple pop music which is not challenging to the ear at all is at the lower end.

    March 10, 2009 at 7:44 pm

  134. I agree that this is not about what music makes you get better SAT scores, it’s about what most people with high SAT scores listen to, in other words what middle-class people, people with lots of privileges and advantages listen to. That’s all. There’s no cause and effect here. If you’ve grown up with all the same advantages, but you like goth or whatever, you’ll still have an advantage on the SATs.

The only real problem I see with this is how low jazz scored… I mean, I guess I can understand if you’re talking about Louis Armstrong or Ella Fitzgerald, and how people who listen to them might not on the whole be as interested in SATs as some cunty white kids listening to Third Eye Blind and thinking it’s deep. 😛 But I would expect the people who listen to Miles and Trane and the like to bring jazz up a good amount from where it’s at… but whatevz… correlation does not imply causality.

The degree to which some of you people blindly make claims is terrifying. Please think before you post. I realize that this is the internet and that as such no one holds you accountable for things that you say, but reach inside for some integrity to check yourself by. If you want to make a claim, you need evidence to back it up. For example, consider someone with a dislike of Lil Wayne (as many of you claim to be). That distaste when combined with a prejudice toward people you IMAGINE listen to Lil Wayne does not permit you to draw the conclusion that Lil Wayne listeners are less intelligent by virtue of their music taste. I listen to a wide breadth of music, including classic rock, alt. rock, metal, pop, jazz, classical, hip hop, rap (I find some Lil Wayne enjoyable), electronic, instrumental, and even some country as of late. It is my opinion that music reflects one’s character. Intelligence may affect one’s interpretation of music, but music does not seem to affect one’s intellectual capacities. A correlation alone does not mean ANYTHING in affirming or denying an argument. A few of you scare the living hell out of me.

In other words the very thing that you all (just the ignorant idiots and racist, regardless of race) are arguing so intensely about was simply created because he was BORED! It’s like dropping bait in front of a bunch of ignorant, dumb ass, uneducated, racist animals (No humanity!) and seeing how much you all can embarrass yourselves and the times you represent. July 15, 2009 at 8:51 am

  154. Tiye

I read only a few of these comment. None of them are accurate.
Music with more instruments are better for studying because you aren’t focused on singing/rapping the words. I’m black and I listen to a mixture of things. I know music that I like to shake my hips to, or sing along with will not help me study, so instead I’ll put on music I know I don’t like or some Debussy to help me consentrate. Sufjan, Radiohead and Ben Folds are all great and calming to listen to, but once you know the words and the beat, it’s distracting and you want to sing along.
Anyway, what does race have to do with anything? White people can listen to Lil Wayne as can blacks, latinos, etc can listen to Beethoven.
None of this has to do with how smart anyone is. Someone can say Lil Wayne is their favorite artist, but that doesn’t mean they can’t pick up a newspaper and see what’s going on in the world. Also listening to Beethoven doesn’t mean you’ll become president either.
If you want to pass your SATs I suggest not listening to any music. If you have been paying attention to your school work like you should have been, the SATs shouldn’t be that difficult. But if you slacked off, you can’t expect to pass either.
Anyway, the SATs are a load of crap anyway. You can get a 1435 and still not be able to bring the knowledge to real life situations, and be pretty much useless.

    August 8, 2009 at 12:16 am

    • igni_renovatur

I disagree. Music actually can help certain people study. I know that I get less distracted when I have headphones on then when I’m not listening to anything at all. I suppose it’s just a matter of learning how to push the audio input to the back of your mind. I actually find it easier to do this when I’m listening to a song that I *do* know really well, although you do have a point in that certain songs (mostly my top 5 or 10 favorites) *will* distract me without a doubt. ^_^’
On the other hand, all people are different and there are many different study habits. What works for some may not work for others.

The music you listen to has nothing to do with how smart you are. You can listen to whatever you like, it will not make you any smarter or stimulate the brain. The chart has nothing to do with the music it is more about the people who listen to the music. This is just like the thing with video games. If you want to be smart study.

  160. shaniah

The type of music that you listen to does not make you smart or dumb. Music does not effect the IQ, it only effects the level of concentration.

eminem makes “black music” jimi hendrix makes “white music”

    hilarious

on a side note i don’t necessarily think that listening to a certain type of music will make you smarter or dumber, but it will influence how you act and what you do. And people get judged by how you act and what you do and can fall into the category of stupid or smart based on the actions seen. Now with this said black people tend to like Hip Hop and sometimes even glorify what the rappers say, killing people, robbing people, selling drugs for quick cash etc. but not all black people are like that. It’s all in the decision making of the person at hand.

This graph is probably accurate, but it has nothing to do with music making you smarter or dumber. It just reflects the other predictors of test scores.

Families that listen to Beethoven, for example, tend to have higher income, and kids from higher income families to better on standardized tests.

Conversely, people who listen to hip-hop and gospel tend to come from urban areas, and kids from urban areas score lower on standardized tests.

I don’t need to repeat the valid arguments everyone has already made. Everyone should know by now that the SAT is bullshit, and your race and class are better predictors of how you’ll score than what music you listen to. Alex, James, and other people have brought up similar points.

For the record, I scored a 2340 on the SAT (1560 on the old scale). About 90% of what I listen to is rap/hip-hop… including Lil’ Wayne. Only idiots would believe this study has any statistical accuracy or value. Correlation does not imply causation.

  168. Eh

I believe that some of this might be true; however, I believe it has no significant impact. I grew up playing violin (starting at age 5) and I still play now at at 17, but on the other hand, around the time I became a teenager, a passion for rap/hip-hop infested itself within me. Now of course then I listened to the mainstream music, which I don’t care for a majority of it now. Currently my favorite artists to listen to include: Talib Kweli, Atmosphere, Immortal Technique (Popular, but still I consider underground and not mainstream), Cunninlynguists, N.W.A., Binary Star, Nas, etc. So essentially I have gone from mainstream to underground/90s. I am currently enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (thats the international spelling for all of you about to critique me) and I receive some of the best grades in my school. Not here to brag, simply just stating that I listen to 99% rap/hip-hop and I am FAR from unintelligent, but perhaps that may have something to do with my classical background. I will never know….

P.S. Old hip-hop is FAR better then 90% of this new garbage…. although I must defend Lil Wayne, because I do enjoy a little “Weezy” now and then.

is the debate here weird or what?
this is 2010, not 1985. its not the time wen only black ppl listened to rap music. u ppl probably have no idea as to how many ppl around the entire planet listen to it.
the demographics would consist of at least more than 50% non-blacks.
but yes rap today is one of the worst and dumbest forms of music (and lil’ wayne is as dumb as it gets). it wasn’t always so. most of da morons singing today are talking about banging whores, driving hot cars, making all the money in the world while the black community is still suffering in the US.
how much do these idiots actually give back to communities when they make to the “good life”?
intelligent and sensible black musicians like “The Last Poets” knew how to use words and rhymes to describe the plight of their ppl and convey meaningful messages. the type of thing that is sorely lacking today despite the potential power of rap to do good.

But generally is important, I made a higher score than the Beethoven listeners, and my iTunes is filled with music from the 800 to 1000 range.

Also, those scores are probably from the old SAT, which had a ceiling of 1600, so anyone who is using their score from the new SAT, which is out of 2400, should multiply his score by 2/3 to adjust it if he actually cares about this stupid graph.

Lil Wayne represents what’s wrong in America. His songs promote the “live fast, die young” lifestyle, not nonconformity. What’s worse about him is that black youths in America idolize his music while being unaware of the overall scheme to depopulate the planet(by the Illuminati). All gangsta rappers are apart of a secret society to kill people of color whether physically, emotionally, and psychologically.

Everybody on here keeps saying that listening to Beethoven will stimulate your mind, causing you to do better on the SAT, and that listening to Lil Wayne will make you do worse. There is nothing on this graph that says that. It shows no evidence that the kind of music you listen to affects your performance on the SAT. All it is saying is that people who tend to get certain scores on the SAT tend to listen to certain music. Or, that people who listen to certain music tend to get certain scores on the SAT. I know it’s stereotypical to say this, but upper class white people tend to listen to music such as Beethoven more than other people, and lower class people living in the ghetto tend to listen to music such as Lil Wayne more than other groups of people. These are also the people who tend to score higher and lower on the SAT, respectively. It is not that the music makes you smarter or dumber. It’s just that the people who tend to get certain scores on the SAT are the same people who tend to listen to certain kinds of music

This study suggests that people who are of a (white) upper-middle class background achieve higher test scores. This result is unsurprising. Music tastes are slightly correlated with one’s socio-economic background. I never studied for the SAT, therefore my score is much lower than the average “music scores” on this chart.

    October 13, 2010 at 11:51 am

  202. John

Very stupid study the guy wasted his time.
Of course the people that actually listen to Beethoven will get the highest scores (I mean who listens to Beethoven anyways) Also minorities are more likely to listen to “black music” and white people are more likely to listen to “white music”
Anyways those SAT scores are incredibly low is this out of 1600 because if it is then this survey is extremely outdated. If this isn’t out of 1600 then the people who were in this survey were extremely uneducated.

    October 13, 2010 at 8:17 pm

  203. I don’t understand why most of you think this is about race. The main people who sing more advanced things are white. The main people who rap are black. But I live in South Mississippi and I think I can say this with confidence because my school is 50/50 race wise.

I just found this site doing a statistics project in my STAT class, but I agree that the type of music you listen to does not have as much as an impact to test scores as people think. I believe that how well a person does on a test comes from their own preparation for that specific test and their ability to pay attention in class.

    January 5, 2011 at 10:23 am

  206. Every line that comes out of Lil waynes’ mouth is stolen from someone else like biggie smalls, tupac and many others. So if he ever says something clever, it doesn’t change the fact that he is retarded.

Also, SATs and IQ tests can only show the difference between retards and other people
intelligence is something that you (if you are smart) can only evaluate by communicating and getting to know the individual (subject) a little bit.

Narrow minded nerds who only listen to Beethoven are not necessarily smart even if their lives revolve around studying in school.

P.S. Genres are a vast term in some cases, for example in hip hop. I listen to hip hop a lot, but i HATE these commercial rappers and producers nowadays. Some of the smartest people i know listen to hip hop, but personaly i think open minded people are smarter, and lets not forget that musical taste could only evaluate creative and artistic smarts.

In the early studies of pyscho-acoustics they related the rhythmic, tonal, melodic, and harmonic elements of music to that of elements within the human mind, and things we perceive.

Such as Gravitation, in music theory certain notes cause certain tension based on how much they gravitate towards the tonic. This stimulates your cerebellum in a way that a shift in gravity would, or raising or falling would.

Classical music heavily uses gravitation and tension which keeps you interested and stimulated, while also your brain is trying to detect the changing patterns in the music.

Where Classical changes harmony and melody several times, hip hop and electronic tend to keep redundant melodies, often lacking harmony all together, and maintaining the same 10 second loop of percussion. This provides no stimulation of tension, gravitation, and the brain quickly adapts to the patterns of the song. Also the often use of dissonance in the music can create of lot of anxiety within the music, whereas in jazz and more avant garde classical dissonance is used as a passing tone to create high tension to capture interest.

This isn’t a new discovery, it isn’t racist, nor classist(if thats a word). I’m rather surprised that jazz scored such a low SAT score, it typically involves more complexity than Classical.

    May 12, 2011 at 7:58 pm

  208. Caminga

    @tustursl

Jazz didn’t score a low SAT score, the people who happen to listen to jazz did. Complexity in music does not necessarily attract “more complex” or more intelligent people.

Not! Sorry. I am in the top percentile in the nation on the SAT, GRE and LSAT and taught all 3 at Princeton Review for three years and would bet that if I administered any of the 3 tests to you, you would not even score close to what you claim. Sorry.
BUT, that doesnt mean it has anything to do with the music you listen to: rap is the most vital music out there today. It was just the 7th grade thing that made it sound ridiculous.

In fact, I think they are way more vital, original and relevant than most of the high correlation composers (classical ones excepted since they are now established and have lapsed into anthological permanence, and with good reason: they are great)

You people are ALL ignorant, music doesn’t define people’s intelligence or effect their SAT scores. The correlation here on the chart is showing me this: People who listen to classical music tend to score higher on the SAT’s. Right. Because they study their ASSES off trying to do better than the rest. You really think that if two people studied consecutively for days that one person would score significantly higher because they listen to classical music? That’s a load of BULLSHIT. I say bullshit to studies which say classical music has a tendency to make you smarter. I say bullshit to people who say your music taste defines your intelligence. All this study is showing me is that people who listen to Lil Wayne tend to not try as hard or study as much as those who listen to Beethoven. In fact, if people listen to classical music to make them smarter then they must be pretty insecure about their intelligence to need to quarantine their music taste. I know plenty of children who listen to classical music and know a lot of useless facts and information because they want to flaunt intelligence because they have some form of a mental stigma that keeps them from receiving acceptance with normal children. Not only that but people who listen to music which claims to promote mental benevolence tend to be closer connected to the entity of worrying about insignificant factors of social society. This meaning they tend to look down on others, worry more about how they appear to others, and actually believe that there is one set way to live and a narrow path to pursue. In a world where nothing is perfect or justifiable people who label music to their audiences intelligence can drop dead. Case closed.

I checked the site [http://musicthatmakesyoudumb.virgil.gr/] where the experimenter describes his methodology.

“… download, using Facebook, the ten most frequent “favorite music” at every college”

“Download the average SAT/ACT score (from CollegeBoard) for students attending every college.”

This study was thrown together in an afternoon by some smartass Caltech student. But if you still insist on taking this graph seriously notice that-

CLASSICAL MUSIC DOESN’T RANK VERY WELL

If you really want to maximize your intelligence then your favorite artist should be Beethoven and your favorite genre should be techno. You’ll be bumpin’ your way to the top of the academic food-pyramid in no time.

We could all just agree that everyone comes from different walks of life, and that trying to base SAT scores off of what music you listen to is ridiculous. Seeing as your taste in music usually is dependent upon influences during childhood, such as your home life and environment, this whole chart is bogus. Also, I know some really dumb people who listen to Beethoven. Just sayin’.

Ok, yeah some (or many) smart people do listen to Lil Wayne, but this is based on an AVERAGE!!! Take out the top 10% and bottom 10% of those who listen to Lil Wayne and you probably end up with still the lowest.
It is not saying that only smart people listen to Beethoven or only dumb people listen to Weezy, but when you average it out you get the lowest scores. Also, look at most of the inner city kids for a fact. Nearly all of them idolize the rappers that throw out the N-word like it has no meaning and their scores on standardized tests are the lowest in the country b/c they lack educational needs.

It is not just race, but your environment. That is what I hate about African Americans saying that white people are racist when we bring up that type of a debate. It is the environment you grow up in that makes you dumber, but there is a direct correlation to African Americans growing up in the inner city with a bad environment. Thus, leading them to live in a bad environment and resulting in lower academic standards.
I live 45minutes away from Detroit and since coming to college at MSU I have realized that some of the DUMBEST people I have met on this campus have came from a Detroit Public School, and all of them have been of African decent. I am not saying it is their race that makes them dumber, but the environment they grew up in.

Here in MI there are not many cities in which in a nice academic HS you will find 50/50 of white vs. black students, even finding 70/30 in the top academic HS is very hard to find. From 1972 to 2009, my HS had graduated 29 African Americans, and 19 of them came in the last 4 yrs. Our school is considered ok in our county b/c Oakland county but compared to the entire state we are highly ranked b/c Oakland County(take out Pontiac) is a predominant white community, being one of the richest communities. We do have a good mix of races, but really the black population is probably the 3rd or 4th highest amongst races. But it is an environment issue not a race issue. But it is just that they are very well correlated that blacks tend to live in more low income, low academic areas than blacks living in great communities with a high income and high academic standards.

That is why usually the most successful African Americans are either athletes or kids that went to Catholic Schools b/c their parents were smart enough to know that if they went to a HS in their city their kid would not get a good education needed to get to college and be successful in college. I hear freshmen from Detroit schools talk about how they graduated with a 3.6 GPA and by their Sophomore year they are on academic probation b/c you could be a top 10 student at a bad, low income city school and you may not even be able to compete with students that were at the 50 percentile ranking at just a normal school in an area full of just middle class families and an ok educational system.
With that note having lived in MI and seeing DPS schools I would have to say that I would rather be the 100th class ranked student at a school in Oakland county (excluding Pontiac or Avondale) than a top 10 student at a Detroit Public School

if you look at the graph , classical music as a genre scored not much better than waynes listeners did. Techo however was the highest scoring genre ,which to me, holds more weight than a single artist (beethoven) obviously as it many artists clumped together.

  235. Entertaining, but not anything to draw any conclusions from.

I found it interesting that my favorite artist, Prince, who has a 30-year catalog of music, is not on the list, nor my second favorite, MeShelle NDegeocello. One of the things I appreciate about both of them is their propensity for writing songs with thought-provoking lyrics.

I got 1400 on my SATs, and am totally apathetic to Beethoven, but real talk, I can’t stand Lil Wayne and much of today’s hip hop, and I always joke that my brain hurts when I hear it because I am allergic to stupid.
