Dead Puerto Rican Kept Upright At 3-Day Wake
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A Puerto Rican man has been granted his wish to remain standing — even in death.
Dressed in a Yankees baseball cap and sunglasses, Pantoja was mourned by relatives while propped upright in his mother’s living room.
A funeral home used a special embalming treatment to keep the corpse of 24-year-old Angel Pantoja Medina standing upright for his three-day wake.
His brother Carlos told the El Nuevo Dia newspaper the victim had long said he wanted to be upright for his own wake: “He wanted to be happy, standing.”
The owner of the Marin Funeral Home, Damaris Marin, told The Associated Press the mother asked him to fulfill her dead son’s last wish.
Pantoja was found dead Friday underneath a bridge in San Juan and buried Monday. Police are investigating.

In Puerto Rico it is custom to have the wake in ones home. I found this to be different but not disturbing, this was this young man wish and his parents as different may it be, granted his wish.
They got over it, those who dont agree should also, have some respect for the dead atleast….like being shot 7 times and left under a bridge ain’t bad enough.

Everyone must know facts such as this is not a Puerto Rican tradition however it WAS in Egypt and Ireland based on religious and climate conditions.
He did this to stand for his own personal reasons maybe pride maybe as a final screw you to the gang that killed him and maybe he discussed this with friends and family and they understood after he explained it to them on why he wanted to stand and dress in his regular attire which is the style of many young people all over and not ghetto per say. You have to live in NYC, among Puerto Ricans, to realize how childish and stupid they are,,but this is a reasonably good example, and a good example of why Puerto Rico should be made independent of the U.S. and why all Puerto Ricans should be deported back there. They only came here after WWII, and are basically the flotsam and jetsam of the old Spanish Empire. We acquired it as a naval base , now abandoned, time to clean up the mess they have made here.
